Chapter 8: The Daughter Nobody Knew

The word echoed through the room.

Adopted.

Nia stared at the woman standing in the doorway.

Her grandmother.

A stranger who somehow knew the biggest secret of her life.

“No.””

The word left Nia’s mouth before she even thought about it.

The woman’s expression softened slightly.

“I know this is difficult.””

“Difficult?””

Nia laughed once.

It sounded nothing like laughter.

“You just walked into my house and told me my entire life is a lie.””

Marcus immediately stepped toward her.

“Nia.””

She turned to him.

“Is it true?””

Marcus stopped.

That pause was enough.

Nia looked at Danielle.

“Is it true?””

Danielle’s eyes filled with tears.

She didn’t answer.

And once again, silence became the answer.

Nia stepped back.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“No, no, no.””

Caleb moved closer.

“Nia…”

She raised a hand.

“Don’t.””

Everyone stopped.

Because they could see it.

She wasn’t angry anymore.

She was hurt.

The kind of hurt that made anger feel too exhausting.

“I need someone to tell me the truth.””

Her voice trembled.

“Just once.””

The older woman stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

“I am Eleanor.””

Nia looked at her.

“I know.””

Eleanor nodded.

“Then you know I’m your grandmother.””

“Apparently.””

The bitterness in Nia’s voice made Marcus look away.

Eleanor accepted it.

“I understand why you’re angry.””

“No, you don’t.””

Eleanor was quiet.

Nia wiped her face.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“You’re right.””

That answer surprised everyone.

Eleanor continued.

“I don’t know what it feels like to have your entire identity questioned.””

Danielle looked at her.

“You don’t get to act like you care.””

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“I cared.””

“Then why did you let her grow up believing she wasn’t wanted?””

The question hung in the room.

Nia looked at Danielle.

Then at Eleanor.

Nobody answered.

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“Everyone sits down.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus’s voice became firmer.

“Now.””

For the first time that night, everyone listened.

They gathered around the dining table.

Nia sat between Caleb and Marcus.

Danielle sat across from her.

Eleanor remained standing for a moment before taking the last chair.

The family looked like a normal family.

But Nia knew better now.

Normal was just what people showed you.

Marcus placed his hands on the table.

“Nia, there are things we should have told you.””

“That’s an understatement.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

She looked surprised.

Maybe because he didn’t argue.

Maybe because he finally stopped trying to explain everything away.

Marcus took a deep breath.

“When you were born, Danielle and I were young.””

Danielle looked down.

“We weren’t prepared for everything that happened.””

Eleanor interrupted.

“You were not prepared because you were making decisions based on emotions instead of reality.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Not now.””

“No. Now is exactly when.””

Nia looked between them.

“Why was I adopted?””

Danielle immediately answered.

“You weren’t unwanted.””

Nia looked at her.

“Then why?””

Danielle reached for a tissue.

“Because you weren’t safe.””

The room became quiet.

Nia frowned.

“Safe from what?””

Danielle looked at Eleanor.

Then at Richard.

Then back at Nia.

“When I was pregnant with you, I found out there were people trying to use you.””

“Use me?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Eleanor spoke.

“The family inheritance.””

Nia stared.

“I don’t understand.””

Richard, who had been silent near the window, finally spoke.

“Your existence changed everything.””

Nia looked at him.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if you understand how much money and power were involved.””

Marcus looked disgusted.

“She was a baby.””

Richard looked away.

“I know.””

“And you still treated her like a problem to solve.””

Richard didn’t respond.

Nia looked at Danielle.

“So you gave me away?””

Danielle’s face broke.

“No.””

Her voice was immediate.

“No, I didn’t.””

“Then what happened?””

Danielle reached across the table.

But Nia didn’t take her hand.

Danielle lowered it.

“When you were born, there was a mistake at the hospital.””

Nia remembered the earlier conversation.

“The records?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Danielle continued.

“There was another baby born around the same time.””

Nia froze.

“What?””

Everyone became still.

Danielle’s voice shook.

“The hospital made a serious mistake with the records.””

Nia looked confused.

“What kind of mistake?””

Danielle looked at Marcus.

He answered.

“For a short time, the hospital records listed the wrong mother.””

Nia stared.

“So…”

She swallowed.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor spoke quietly.

“It means your birth records were questioned.””

Nia looked at Danielle.

“Were you my mother?””

Danielle’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

She answered immediately.

“Yes.””

Nia searched her face.

“Then why did everyone act like there was doubt?””

Danielle looked down.

“Because someone wanted there to be doubt.””

Everyone turned toward Eleanor.

Eleanor’s face remained calm.

“Not me.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew.””

“I knew there were questions.””

“You encouraged them.””

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“I did what I believed was necessary.””

Nia stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor looked directly at her.

“It means I wanted proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That you were safe.””

Nia shook her head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does when you understand what Richard was doing.””

Richard looked at her.

“Careful.””

Eleanor ignored him.

“He was trying to gain control of the family assets. If Nia was legally connected to certain documents, her future would be affected.””

Marcus frowned.

“But she was my daughter.””

Eleanor looked at him.

“At the time, we didn’t know.””

Nia felt overwhelmed.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“I don’t understand.””

Her voice became smaller.

“Am I Danielle’s daughter or not?””

Danielle immediately leaned forward.

“Yes.””

“Then why am I adopted?””

Nobody answered.

Finally, Marcus said:

“Because we wanted to protect you.””

Nia closed her eyes.

Again.

That word.

Protect.

She looked at him.

“Who adopted me?””

Marcus went quiet.

Danielle whispered:

“We did.””

Nia frowned.

“What?””

“We made it official.””

“But you’re my parents.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Danielle cried silently.

“Because after everything happened, we wanted to make sure nobody could take you away.””

Nia looked at the documents.

“So all these years…”

Marcus nodded.

“We knew the legal truth.””

“But you hid it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But somehow, it hurt less than another excuse.

Nia looked at Eleanor.

“And you?””

Eleanor looked down.

“I helped.””

“With what?””

“Making sure the adoption was completed.””

Nia stared.

“So you knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my whole life.””

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

Nia stood.

“I need air.””

Marcus immediately stood.

“I’ll come with you.””

“No.””

He stopped.

“I just…”

“I need a minute.””

Nobody followed.

Nia walked toward the backyard.

The cold air hit her face.

For a moment, she just stood there.

She thought about the watch.

The accusation.

The secrets.

The people who claimed they loved her.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

But nobody had trusted her enough to tell her the truth.

A few minutes later, footsteps approached.

She turned.

It was Caleb.

He stopped a few feet away.

“I’m sorry.””

Nia looked down.

“For what?””

“For not knowing.””

She gave a small, sad smile.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Caleb sat on the porch step.

“I know.””

Silence passed.

Then he said:

“For what it’s worth, you’re still my sister.””

Nia looked at him.

Even after everything.

That was the first thing that felt simple.

“Thanks.””

Caleb nodded.

Then his expression changed.

“Nia.””

“What?””

“There’s something I didn’t tell Dad.””

Her stomach tightened.

“What?””

Caleb looked toward the house.

“Before Vanessa accused you…”

He hesitated.

“I saw someone near her purse.””

Nia froze.

“Who?””

Caleb swallowed.

“I thought it was nothing.””

“Who?””

He looked at her.

“It was Danielle.””

Nia’s heart stopped.

“What?””

“I saw her near Vanessa’s purse that morning.””

The world suddenly felt cold again.

“But she said she didn’t put anything there.””

“I know.””

Nia stood.

“Then why didn’t you say anything?””

“Because I didn’t know what I saw.””

They looked at each other.

Then Caleb said the words that changed everything again.

“She wasn’t taking money.””

Nia stared.

“Then what was she doing?””

Caleb looked toward the house.

“She was putting something inside.””

Nia felt her chest tighten.

“What?””

Caleb’s voice dropped.

“The same kind of envelope we found tonight.””

Nia looked back at the house.

At her mother.

At all the secrets waiting inside.

Then her phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Nia opened it.

One sentence.

One name.

May you like

And a warning.

*Ask Danielle why she really chose you.*
