Chapter 6: The Blood Test Nobody Wanted

The room changed after Richard said it.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

Like someone had turned off the air.

Nia stood in the middle of the living room, still holding the photograph in her hand.

The words kept replaying.

Marcus is not your biological father.

She looked at Marcus.

Waiting.

Waiting for him to laugh.

Waiting for him to say Richard was lying.

Waiting for someone to tell her this was another cruel game between adults.

But Marcus didn’t laugh.

He didn’t deny it.

And that scared her more than anything.

“Dad?””

Her voice cracked.

Marcus looked at her.

The pain in his eyes answered before his mouth did.

“Nia…”

She stepped back.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Almost like she was asking the world to stop.

“No.””

Danielle immediately moved toward her.

“Sweetheart—”

“Don’t.””

Nia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Don’t call me that right now.””

Danielle stopped.

The hurt on her face was obvious.

But Nia couldn’t think about anyone else’s feelings.

Not now.

Not when everything she knew about herself had just been pulled apart.

She looked at Marcus.

“Is it true?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence broke something inside her.

“Is it true?””

This time, louder.

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.””

The room disappeared for a moment.

Nia could hear her own heartbeat.

Yes.

One word.

That was all it took.

She had spent twelve years calling him Dad.

She had his last name.

She had his pictures on her walls.

She had memories of him teaching her to ride a bike, making pancakes on Sunday mornings, and sitting beside her hospital bed when she broke her arm.

And now someone was telling her that blood mattered more than all of that.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“You knew?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“You knew?””

Marcus finally nodded.

“Yes.””

Nia looked at him.

The tears came.

Not because he wasn’t her biological father.

She didn’t even fully understand what that meant yet.

They came because he had kept something this big from her.

“You knew my whole life?””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

He swallowed.

“When you were old enough.””

Nia laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“Old enough?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Nia, please.””

She moved away.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””

Nobody spoke.

She looked at Danielle.

“You protected me by disappearing.””

Then at Marcus.

“You protected me by lying.””

Then at Richard.

“And you…”

She looked at him with anger.

“You came here and destroyed everything.””

Richard didn’t react.

Because he knew.

He had done exactly what he came to do.

Marcus turned toward him.

“You don’t get to stand there like you’re innocent.””

Richard looked at him calmly.

“I never said I was.””

That answer surprised everyone.

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Richard walked closer to the table.

“I made mistakes.””

Danielle stared at him.

“You ruined our lives.””

Richard’s expression hardened slightly.

“And you made choices too.””

“Don’t.””

“No. She deserves the truth.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Richard looked at him.

“You spent twelve years pretending you were her father.””

Marcus’s eyes flashed.

“I raised her.””

Richard went silent.

For the first time, something in his expression changed.

Not confidence.

Not control.

Something closer to discomfort.

Marcus continued.

“I was there when she had nightmares.””

His voice shook.

“I was there when she took her first steps.””

He looked at Nia.

“I was there when she called me Dad for the first time.””

Nia’s eyes filled again.

Richard looked away.

But only for a second.

Then he said:

“And I was the man who made sure she was safe.””

Danielle immediately responded.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Richard’s face changed.

“What?””

Danielle stepped forward.

“You weren’t protecting her.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You were controlling everything.””

Richard stared at her.

“You know that isn’t true.””

“I know exactly what’s true.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Danielle took a deep breath.

Then she looked at Nia.

“I should have told you years ago.””

Nia didn’t respond.

“I was pregnant with you when I found out about Richard.””

Richard’s face tightened.

“Danielle.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I’m done being afraid.””

The room became silent.

“When I was pregnant, I discovered Richard had been hiding things from me.””

Marcus frowned.

“What things?””

Danielle looked at him.

“Financial records. Legal documents.””

Richard shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understood enough.””

She turned back to Nia.

“He wasn’t just trying to control our family.””

She paused.

“He was trying to control who would inherit it.””

Nia blinked.

“Inherit what?””

Richard answered.

“Nothing.””

Danielle looked at him.

“Don’t lie.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Someone please explain.””

Danielle sat down.

Her hands trembled.

“When Richard found out I was pregnant, he wanted a DNA test.””

Nia looked at her.

“Why?””

Danielle looked at Marcus.

“Because he believed Marcus wasn’t the father.””

Nobody spoke.

Nia looked at Marcus.

“Were you?””

Marcus nodded.

“I was.””

Richard interrupted.

“You assumed.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“What?””

Richard stepped closer.

“You assumed because Danielle told you.””

Danielle stared.

“Richard.””

But he continued.

“You never saw the test results.””

Marcus’s face changed.

Nia looked confused.

“What test?””

Richard reached into his coat again.

This time, Marcus moved forward.

“What do you have?””

Richard pulled out a folder.

A thick one.

“I have the truth.””

Danielle whispered:

“No.””

Marcus opened it.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Medical records.

A DNA report.

Nia watched his face as he read.

The color disappeared.

“What does it say?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

His hands shook.

Richard spoke.

“It says the test was never completed.””

Nia looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus looked up.

Richard continued.

“Because someone changed the sample.””

Danielle’s eyes widened.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard looked at her.

“Is it?””

He placed another document on the table.

“A receipt.””

Vanessa immediately looked at it.

Another receipt.

Another piece of evidence.

Richard pointed.

“On the same day the DNA test was supposed to be processed, someone paid a laboratory employee to destroy the original sample.””

Marcus stared.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Richard looked directly at Danielle.

Then at Marcus.

Then finally at Nia.

“The person who was most afraid the truth would come out.””

Nia felt sick.

“Who?””

Richard didn’t look away.

“Your mother.””

Danielle’s face went completely still.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Danielle?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice lacked confidence.

Nia felt something inside her collapse.

“Mom?””

Danielle looked at her.

“I didn’t do what he’s saying.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“Then explain the payment.””

Marcus grabbed the paper.

He read the name.

Then froze.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

“What is it?””

Marcus slowly raised his eyes.

“It’s not Danielle’s name.””

Richard nodded.

“Exactly.””

The room went silent.

Nia looked at the paper.

“Whose name is it?””

Marcus’s face changed.

May you like

And when he answered, his voice was barely audible.

“It’s Vanessa’s.””
