Chapter 1: The Watch on Her Wrist

The day my daughter was accused of stealing a thousand dollars, the only evidence against her was the one thing that was supposed to make her smile.

A brand-new Apple Watch.

Nia walked through the front door after school with the kind of happiness twelve-year-olds rarely manage to hide. Her backpack hung from one shoulder, her sneakers were covered in tiny drops of rain from the afternoon storm, and every few seconds she glanced down at her wrist like she still couldn’t believe it was real.

The silver watch reflected the warm afternoon sunlight coming through the windows.

To anyone else, it was just a piece of technology.

To Nia, it was a promise.

A promise that someone who had been gone for years still remembered her birthday.

A promise that maybe things were finally changing.

She stepped into the living room, holding back a smile.

She had been told to keep the secret.

Just for a few hours.

That was all.

But secrets have a strange way of turning into weapons when the wrong person discovers them.

Vanessa was sitting on the couch, scrolling through her phone with a cup of coffee resting beside her. She barely looked up when Nia entered.

“Hey,” Nia said softly.

Vanessa gave a distracted nod.

Then her eyes moved.

They stopped on Nia’s wrist.

The change was instant.

Her expression hardened.

“Is that a new Apple Watch?””

Nia’s smile disappeared.

She instinctively pulled her arm closer to her chest.

“Yeah.””

Vanessa placed her phone down.

“Yeah?””

Nia looked uncomfortable.

“It was a gift.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“A gift?””

“Yes.””

“From who?””

Nia hesitated.

That hesitation lasted less than three seconds.

But Vanessa noticed.

Everyone noticed.

Nia lowered her eyes.

“I promised I wouldn’t say yet.””

The room became strangely quiet.

Even the ticking clock on the wall seemed louder.

Vanessa slowly stood from the couch.

“What does that mean?””

Nia swallowed.

“It means I’m supposed to wait.””

“Wait for what?””

Nia didn’t answer.

Because she had promised Danielle.

Earlier that morning, Danielle had stood outside the small coffee shop near the school parking lot, looking nervous and emotional. Nia had almost walked right past her at first.

It had been years.

Years since she had seen her biological mother.

Years since Danielle disappeared from their lives without explanation.

But when Danielle said her name, Nia froze.

“Nia?””

She turned around slowly.

The woman standing there looked older than she remembered. Her hair was shorter. Her face had more lines. But her eyes were the same.

“Nia,” Danielle whispered again.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Danielle hugged her.

And somehow, despite all the years between them, Nia hugged her back.

They sat together for almost an hour.

Danielle explained that she had returned to town and wanted to speak with Marcus before anyone else knew.

Especially before Vanessa knew.

“I don’t want to create chaos,” Danielle had said quietly.

Nia had stared at the table.

“Are you staying?””

Danielle looked away.

“I don’t know yet.””

That answer hurt.

But then Danielle opened a small box.

Inside was the watch.

“I saw this and thought of you.””

Nia shook her head immediately.

“I can’t take that.””

“Yes, you can.””

“It’s too expensive.””

Danielle smiled sadly.

“So are the years I missed.””

Nia had cried then.

Just a little.

Enough that Danielle noticed.

Before they separated, Danielle held her hand.

“Can you do something for me?””

“What?””

“Don’t tell anyone I’m back until I talk to your father.””

Nia had nodded.

“I promise.””

She thought she was protecting a surprise.

She never imagined she was protecting something that could be used against her.

Now, standing in the living room with Vanessa staring at her like she was a stranger, Nia regretted keeping quiet.

Vanessa walked closer.

“Who gave it to you?””

Nia looked down.

“I can’t say.””

Vanessa laughed once.

Not because something was funny.

Because she had already decided what she believed.

“That’s interesting.””

Nia frowned.

“What?””

“You suddenly have an expensive watch, and you won’t tell me where it came from.””

“I already said it was a gift.””

“From who?””

“I can’t tell you.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Why?””

“Because I promised.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“A promise to someone who gave you a watch worth hundreds of dollars?””

Nia’s face tightened.

“It doesn’t mean I did something wrong.””

“No one said you did.””

But Vanessa’s tone said exactly that.

Nia looked toward the hallway.

She wanted her father.

Marcus always knew what to say.

He always listened.

At least, he used to.

Before Vanessa moved in.

Before every small mistake became a lecture.

Before Nia started feeling like she had to prove she belonged in her own home.

Vanessa suddenly turned away.

She walked quickly toward the table near the kitchen.

Then she grabbed her purse.

Nia watched her unzip it.

“What are you doing?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She searched through the bag.

First calmly.

Then faster.

The sound of items being moved around filled the room.

A few seconds passed.

Then Vanessa stopped.

Her face changed.

Nia immediately noticed.

“What happened?””

Vanessa slowly looked up.

“My money.””

Nia blinked.

“What?””

“My money is gone.””

A cold feeling moved through Nia’s stomach.

“What money?””

Vanessa stared at her.

“The thousand dollars I had in my purse.””

Nia stepped back.

“I don’t know anything about that.””

Vanessa emptied the contents of her purse onto the table.

Receipts.

Keys.

A wallet.

Lip balm.

Nothing else.

“My money was right here this morning.””

Nia shook her head.

“I didn’t take it.””

Vanessa looked at the watch.

Not at Nia’s face.

The watch.

“That’s strange.””

Nia’s voice became louder.

“I said I didn’t take it!””

Vanessa picked up the watch with her eyes.

“Then explain that.””

Nia stared at her.

“It was a gift.””

“A very expensive gift.””

“Yes.””

“From someone you won’t name.””

Nia felt tears burning behind her eyes.

“Because I promised.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Nia, do you understand how bad this looks?””

“I didn’t steal anything.””

“Then where did you get it?””

Nia stayed silent.

She couldn’t break her promise.

But Vanessa interpreted the silence differently.

She sighed.

“I cannot believe this.””

Nia’s voice shook.

“You think I stole from you?””

Vanessa looked away for a moment.

Then she said the words that Nia would remember for years.

“I think you’re not telling me the truth.””

That hurt more than being yelled at.

Because Nia could handle anger.

She could handle punishment.

But being looked at like she was a criminal?

That was different.

Footsteps sounded from the stairs.

Caleb, Marcus’s teenage son, appeared at the top of the hallway.

“What’s going on?””

Vanessa turned immediately.

“Your sister has a problem.””

Nia looked at him.

“Caleb, I didn’t—”

Vanessa interrupted.

“Your father’s going to want to hear this.””

Caleb looked between them.

“What happened?””

Vanessa grabbed her phone.

“She stole money from my purse.””

Nia’s eyes widened.

“No, I didn’t!””

Caleb looked shocked.

“Nia?””

“I didn’t take anything!””

Vanessa pressed a contact on her phone.

“Marcus needs to know.””

Nia felt panic rising.

“No. Wait.””

But Vanessa was already calling.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then Marcus answered.

Vanessa put it on speaker.

“Marcus, you need to come home.””

There was concern in his voice.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked directly at Nia.

Her eyes never left the watch.

“Nia stole a thousand dollars from my purse.””

The silence on the phone was immediate.

Nia’s heart dropped.

“Dad, I didn’t—”

Vanessa raised a hand.

“Don’t interrupt.””

Marcus’s voice came through the speaker.

“Vanessa, what are you saying?””

“I had cash in my purse this morning. Now it’s gone. And your daughter is wearing a brand-new Apple Watch she refuses to explain.””

Nia felt her throat tighten.

“Dad, please listen to me.””

A few seconds passed.

Then Marcus spoke.

“Don’t touch anything.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“I said don’t touch anything. I’m coming home.””

The call ended.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nia finally felt a tiny bit of relief.

Her father was coming.

He would listen.

He would know she was telling the truth.

At least, that was what she believed.

But then Vanessa picked up her purse and whispered something under her breath.

Something so quiet that Nia almost missed it.

“Let’s see who gave you that watch.””

Nia looked at her.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

But there was nothing kind about it.

“I said your father is going to find out everything.””

Ten minutes later, the front door opened.

Marcus walked inside.

But he wasn’t alone.

Behind him stood a woman Nia had not expected to see.

May you like

A woman she had promised to keep secret.

And the moment Danielle looked at the Apple Watch on Nia’s wrist, her face went pale.
