Chapter 7: The Name on the Receipt

The room went silent after Marcus said it.

Vanessa’s name.

Not Danielle’s.

Not Richard’s.

Vanessa’s.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nia looked at Vanessa, waiting for an explanation.

Waiting for her to laugh.

Waiting for her to say there was some mistake.

But Vanessa didn’t.

She just stood there.

Her face had lost all color.

Marcus held the receipt tightly.

“What is this?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Nessa.””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What is this?””

“I don’t know.””

Richard let out a quiet breath.

“Of course.””

Vanessa immediately turned toward him.

“Don’t.””

“Don’t what?””

“Act like you know everything.””

Richard smiled faintly.

“I know enough.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Nia stayed still.

She felt like every answer created another question.

Every secret opened another door.

Marcus placed the receipt on the table.

“This says a payment was made to a laboratory employee.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I didn’t make that payment.””

Richard looked at her.

“You did.””

“No.””

“You did it through someone else.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re lying.””

Richard looked at Marcus.

“You still don’t see it?””

Marcus frowned.

“See what?””

“Why your wife was so quick to accuse Nia.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Excuse me?””

Richard continued.

“She saw the watch. She saw Danielle. She knew exactly what questions to ask.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Nessa…”

She shook her head.

“Don’t listen to him.””

But there was something different now.

A crack.

A hesitation.

Nia noticed it.

And so did everyone else.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Did you know Danielle was back?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“No.””

“Did you know about the watch?””

“No.””

“Then why were you so certain something was wrong?””

Vanessa looked frustrated.

“Because it looked suspicious.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The room grew heavier.

Vanessa looked at Nia.

Then away.

“I was protecting this family.””

Nia felt a sharp pain in her chest.

Those words again.

Protecting.

Everyone used that word when they wanted to explain hurting someone.

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“By accusing my daughter?””

“I didn’t know.””

“But you said she stole.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Because there was no defense.

Not a good one.

Nia quietly said:

“You believed the worst about me.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Nia…”

“No.””

Nia wiped her face.

“You did.””

Her voice shook.

“You saw a watch and decided I was a thief.””

Vanessa’s expression softened for a moment.

“I was wrong.””

The apology sounded small.

Too small.

Nia looked away.

Being called innocent didn’t erase being called guilty.

Richard watched the exchange silently.

Then he turned to Marcus.

“You need to understand something.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

“This wasn’t about money.””

He pointed toward the receipt.

“The watch.””

Then toward the photograph.

“The documents.””

Then finally toward Nia.

“It was all about controlling the truth.””

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“Why?””

Richard looked at Danielle.

“Because some people were afraid you would find out who Nia really belongs to.””

Danielle’s face hardened.

“She belongs with Marcus.””

Richard looked at her.

“You know that’s not what I mean.””

Nia stepped back.

“I hate this.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“I hate that everyone keeps talking about me like I’m not here.””

Nobody spoke.

She looked at Marcus.

“I’m not a secret.””

Then at Danielle.

“I’m not a mistake.””

Then at Richard.

“I’m not something people fight over.””

Her words surprised everyone.

Even herself.

Marcus walked toward her.

“Nia.””

She looked up.

“I need to know the truth.””

Marcus nodded.

“You will.””

“No more protecting me.””

His expression broke slightly.

“Okay.””

“No more lies.””

Marcus looked at Danielle.

Then nodded.

“No more lies.””

Richard pulled out a chair.

“I agree.””

Everyone looked at him.

Nia frowned.

“Why?””

Richard looked at her.

“Because you deserve the truth.””

She studied him.

“You don’t get to pretend you care.””

Richard accepted that.

“Maybe I don’t deserve to.””

That answer surprised her.

Before anyone could respond, Caleb suddenly spoke.

“There’s something wrong.””

Everyone looked at him.

He was staring at the documents on the table.

“What?””

He pointed.

“The dates.””

Marcus looked down.

“What about them?””

Caleb picked up the paper carefully.

“The receipt for the lab payment.””

He looked at Richard.

“You said this happened when Nia was born.””

“Yes.””

“But this date…”

He looked confused.

“It’s three months after she was born.””

The room froze.

Richard’s expression changed.

“What?””

Caleb handed him the paper.

Richard read it.

For the first time all night, he looked uncertain.

Marcus immediately noticed.

“You didn’t know?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Danielle stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at everyone.

“It means someone paid the lab after Nia was already born.””

Nia felt a chill.

“So the test wasn’t about proving who my father was?””

Nobody answered.

Because they were realizing it at the same time.

It was about something else.

Richard slowly looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa stepped back.

“Why are you looking at me?””

Marcus’s voice was quiet.

“Because you knew about the test.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why is your name connected to it?””

“I don’t know.””

Richard looked at the receipt again.

Then at the document.

Then at Vanessa.

“There’s another possibility.””

Everyone waited.

Richard spoke slowly.

“The test wasn’t changed because someone wanted to hide who Nia’s father was.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then why?””

Richard looked at Nia.

“Because someone wanted to hide who her mother was.””

Danielle went completely still.

“What?””

Nia’s face tightened.

“What are you saying?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“No.””

The word came out instantly.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“You know there were questions.””

“Stop.””

“Questions about the hospital records.””

“Stop.””

Danielle looked terrified.

“What hospital records?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

And Nia knew.

He knew something else.

Something he hadn’t told her.

“Dad?””

He opened his eyes.

“I don’t know if it’s true.””

“But you know something.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“There was an error.””

Nia stared.

“An error?””

“At the hospital.””

“When?””

“The day you were born.””

Danielle whispered:

“Marcus…”

He looked at her.

“I thought it was fixed.””

Nia’s voice shook.

“What error?””

Nobody answered.

Then the front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

Cold expression.

Nia had seen her before.

In pictures.

Her grandmother.

Richard looked shocked.

“You came.””

The woman looked at Nia.

Then at the documents.

Then at Marcus.

“You were never supposed to find those.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Mother.””

The woman’s eyes moved to him.

“I told you.””

Her voice was calm.

“I told you the truth would destroy this family.””

Nia stared.

“You’re my grandmother?””

The woman looked at her.

“Yes.””

Nia waited.

For kindness.

For warmth.

For anything.

Instead, the woman said:

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

Then she looked at Danielle.

“But you should have told her.””

Danielle whispered:

“Told her what?””

The woman’s eyes moved back to Nia.

May you like

And her next words changed everything.

“That you were adopted.””
