Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew Everything

Vivian stood in the doorway like she belonged there.

Like she wasn’t the person who had spent weeks destroying everyone around her.

Like she wasn’t the woman I had just discovered was hiding a secret my mother died trying to expose.

I looked at her.

Then at the phone in her hand.

“How long have you been listening?””

She smiled.

“Long enough.””

My hands tightened.

“Did you come here to threaten me?””

“No.””

She stepped inside.

“I came here because you finally found the truth.””

I laughed.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

“You framed Maya.””

“Yes.””

The admission was so casual that it shocked me.

“You admit it?””

Vivian tilted her head.

“Why pretend anymore?””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

She walked toward my desk.

“Because Maya was getting too close.””

“To what?””

“To my past.””

I stared at her.

“What past?””

For the first time, her confidence disappeared.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A crack.

“My past before you.””

I looked at the box.

“My mother knew.””

“She knew too much.””

The way she said it made my stomach turn.

“What happened to my mother?””

Vivian didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I stepped closer.

“Did you kill her?””

The silence was unbearable.

Then Vivian whispered:

“No.””

I almost believed her.

Until she continued.

“But I didn’t save her.””

The room spun.

“What does that mean?””

She looked away.

“Your mother had a choice.””

“A choice?””

“She could have stayed quiet.””

My fists clenched.

“She was protecting me.””

“No.””

Vivian’s voice became colder.

“She was protecting you from me.””

That sentence hurt because it sounded almost honest.

I studied her.

For years, I had believed my wife was heartless.

But standing there, I realized something more terrifying.

She wasn’t emotionless.

She was damaged.

And dangerous.

“Why did you marry me?””

She looked at me.

A long silence passed.

Then she answered:

“Because your father left you everything.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not love.

Not fate.

A calculation.

“You used me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was worse than any lie.

I stepped back.

“And the children?””

Her face changed.

A tiny movement.

“They are my children.””

“They’re not possessions.””

“They are the only thing I will never lose.””

I stared.

“You’re trying to take them from me.””

“No.””

She smiled sadly.

“I’m trying to keep them.””

“From what?””

Her eyes met mine.

“From people like you.””

I almost laughed.

“People like me?””

“Yes.””

She walked closer.

“You think money made you powerful. You think intelligence made you untouchable.””

Her voice lowered.

“But you were always easy to manipulate.””

I felt anger rising.

“What are you talking about?””

“You trust people.””

She smiled.

“That’s your weakness.””

Then she placed something on the desk.

A document.

I recognized it immediately.

Custody papers.

Signed.

Filed.

Ready.

“I already told the court you’re unstable.””

My blood ran cold.

“Based on what?””

She looked at me.

“Based on evidence.””

“What evidence?””

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Me yelling during arguments.

Me looking exhausted.

Me drinking after my father died.

Everything taken out of context.

“You built this.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You built yourself.””

The cruelty of it hit me.

She had taken my worst moments.

My human moments.

And turned them into weapons.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

She ended the call.

“The court wants to see you tomorrow.””

I said nothing.

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

“Oh, Ethan?””

I looked at her.

“You should ask Lucas why he really hid that box.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Vivian smiled.

“Because your brother didn’t hide it to protect you.””

She opened the door.

“He hid it because he was afraid you would discover what he did.””

Then she left.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, I wondered if Vivian had been telling the truth about one thing.

May you like

Maybe I wasn’t only surrounded by enemies.

Maybe I had been protected by someone who was also hiding a crime.
