Chapter 14: The Final Evidence

The next morning, I met Lucas in an abandoned office building outside the city.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

Neither had I.

The difference was that now I didn’t know who deserved my trust.

“You talked to Vivian.””

It wasn’t a question.

I nodded.

“She admitted everything.””

Lucas’s face hardened.

“Everything?””

“Not everything.””

I handed him the notebook.

His expression changed when he saw Rebecca’s handwriting.

“You found this.””

“Yes.””

He flipped through the pages quickly.

Then stopped.

“What?””

He pointed to a page.

I leaned closer.

At the bottom was a sentence I had missed.

*“The real evidence is not with Vivian. It is with the person who started this.””*

I looked at Lucas.

“Your mother?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Someone else.””

“Who?””

Lucas turned the page.

A name was written there.

Daniel.

I stared.

“Daniel started this?””

Lucas nodded.

“But that doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

“Explain.””

Lucas sat down.

“Daniel didn’t meet Vivian by accident.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“He introduced her to us.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew your father.””

I remembered what Rebecca said.

Everyone was connected.

Lucas continued.

“Your father trusted Daniel’s father. They were business partners.””

“So this goes back generations.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the notebook.

“And Vivian was only a piece.””

Lucas nodded.

“A piece that became too powerful.””

Then my phone rang.

Maya.

I answered.

“Mr. Hale.””

Her voice sounded urgent.

“You need to come here.””

“Where?””

“I found something.””

Maya was waiting at the old storage facility where Lucas had kept his evidence.

She looked terrified.

“What happened?””

She handed me a folder.

“I found this hidden inside the original files.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

From my father.

The date was twenty years earlier.

Before I was married.

Before Vivian.

Before everything.

I read.

*To whoever finds this,*

*I made a mistake. A terrible one.*

My breathing slowed.

*I believed I could fix what I had broken. I was wrong.*

The next line made me freeze.

*Daniel’s father did not betray me. I betrayed him.*

I looked up.

“What?””

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t understand either.””

I kept reading.

*I took credit for work that belonged to another man. I destroyed his reputation to protect my own future.*

My heart sank.

My father wasn’t the victim.

He was the beginning.

The next page explained everything.

My father had stolen the foundation of the medical empire from Daniel’s father.

When the truth threatened to come out, he covered it up.

Vivian’s family lost everything.

Daniel’s family lost everything.

And my father built a legacy on the ruins.

I sat down.

The anger I had carried toward Vivian changed.

Not disappeared.

But changed.

She had committed crimes.

Terrible ones.

But she had inherited a war she didn’t start.

Then I saw the final paragraph.

*The only person who knows the complete truth is my daughter.*

I looked at Maya.

“My father had another daughter?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

My hands trembled.

Because I already knew.

Rebecca.

The letter continued.

*Rebecca knows because she was there when I confessed.*

I stopped.

“She was a child.””

Maya nodded.

“She saw everything.””

Then another sound came.

A door opening.

We turned.

Vivian stood there.

But she wasn’t alone.

Daniel was beside her.

I immediately stood.

“You two came together?””

Daniel looked at me.

“We need to talk.””

I laughed.

“Again?””

Vivian looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“Ethan, you need to hear the truth.””

“From both of you?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I never wanted it to go this far.””

I looked at him.

“You helped destroy my family.””

“Yes.””

“Why should I listen?””

Because his answer was unexpected.

“Because I’m the reason your father died.””

Silence.

Nobody moved.

My entire body went cold.

“What did you say?””

Daniel looked down.

“I was there.””

“When?””

“The night he died.””

My heart pounded.

“You told everyone you weren’t.””

“I lied.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Vivian.

Then back at me.

“Because I found out what he had done.””

The room became silent.

“And I confronted him.””

I stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“He had a heart attack during the argument.””

I stared.

“You killed him?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“But I let him die.””

My hands curled into fists.

Then Daniel said something that changed everything.

“Because before he died, your father told me where he hid the final proof.””

I froze.

“What proof?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“The proof that can destroy every person involved.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From Rebecca.

*“Don’t let them take you to the safe.””*

I looked up.

May you like

Because Daniel had just said:

“Your father’s safe deposit box is waiting.””
