Chapter 13: The Notebook That Changed Everything

The first sentence in the notebook made my hands shake.

*“If Ethan Hale ever finds this notebook, it means Vivian has finally failed.””*

I read it again.

Then again.

Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

The notebook wasn’t old.

The pages were clean.

The handwriting was sharp and organized.

Whoever wrote it had expected this exact moment.

I looked at Ethan.

“Buddy, where did Mommy give you this?””

He glanced toward the hallway.

“She came into my room.””

“When?””

“Before she left.””

My heart tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His small fingers twisted together.

“Because she told me not to open it.””

I crouched beside him.

“Did she say why?””

Ethan nodded.

“She said it was only for Daddy.””

I looked at the notebook again.

Vivian had given this to my son.

Not hidden it.

Not destroyed it.

Given it.

That didn’t make sense.

Unless she knew everything was about to collapse.

“Ethan, can you go sit with Caleb for me?””

He looked nervous.

“Are you going to leave?””

“No.””

I touched his shoulder.

“I promise.””

He nodded and walked away.

I waited until he disappeared into the other room.

Then I opened the notebook.

The first pages were dates.

Names.

Events.

A timeline.

And the first name written was mine.

*Ethan Hale — Subject of the inheritance plan.*

My stomach twisted.

I turned the page.

*Vivian did not enter Ethan’s life randomly.*

The words looked like they were written by someone who had spent years uncovering a conspiracy.

I kept reading.

*She was introduced through Daniel. Daniel was introduced through Lucas. Lucas was introduced through me.*

I froze.

Lucas.

My brother.

I kept reading.

*The biggest mistake I made was believing I could control the damage.*

The handwriting changed slightly.

More emotional.

More desperate.

Then I saw the name.

Rebecca.

This notebook was written by Rebecca.

My half-sister.

But why?

I turned the page.

*Ethan, you need to know the truth about your father.*

I stopped.

Everyone had been telling me about my father.

His company.

His secrets.

His mistakes.

But nobody had told me this.

*Your father knew Vivian’s family wanted revenge. He knew they would come after everything he built.*

Another page.

*But he also knew Vivian was not the person everyone believed her to be.*

I frowned.

Not the person everyone believed her to be?

I expected another accusation.

Another betrayal.

But the next sentence shocked me.

*Vivian was originally sent to destroy your family. But she changed.*

I sat back.

Changed?

That wasn’t the Vivian I knew.

The Vivian who framed Maya.

The Vivian who threatened Lucas.

The Vivian who manipulated everyone.

I kept reading.

*She fell in love with you.*

I stared at the page.

No.

I didn’t want that possibility.

Because it complicated everything.

Because hate was easier.

The next line destroyed that thought.

*But then she discovered the truth about what your father did to her family. And she chose revenge over love.*

I closed my eyes.

So Vivian’s feelings had been real.

At least once.

But she had allowed anger to poison everything.

I turned more pages.

There were records.

Evidence.

A confession.

Then I found something that made my blood freeze.

A photograph.

It showed Vivian standing outside a hospital.

Holding a baby.

My baby.

The date was the day Ethan and Caleb were born.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*“The day she almost walked away.””*

I stared.

Almost.

Not did.

Almost.

Then I heard the front door open.

I stood immediately.

A voice came from the hallway.

“Ethan?””

Vivian.

My body went still.

She was supposed to be gone.

I closed the notebook.

Then I walked into the hallway.

Vivian stood there.

No makeup.

No perfect appearance.

No carefully controlled expression.

For the first time, she looked exhausted.

“You found it.””

I didn’t answer.

She looked at the notebook in my hand.

“I wondered if Ethan would give it to you.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because I knew I couldn’t stop what was coming.””

My anger returned.

“You destroyed my family.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

“I know.””

“You hurt Maya.””

“Yes.””

“You used my children.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Regret.

“Because I hated your father more than I loved you.””

The words hit hard.

“Explain.””

She sat down.

“I found out what your father did before I met you.””

“What did he do?””

She looked at the floor.

“He ruined my family.””

I said nothing.

“He took everything from us. The company. The reputation. My mother died believing nobody would ever know the truth.””

“And you blamed me.””

“No.””

She looked up.

“I blamed myself for loving you.””

The room went silent.

“I tried to leave.””

“When?””

“After the twins were born.””

I remembered that year.

The stress.

The distance.

The arguments.

“I couldn’t do it.””

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because Ethan and Caleb looked at me like I was their whole world.””

My anger didn’t disappear.

But something shifted.

“You still chose revenge.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“And that is the thing I regret most.””

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Lucas.

*“Ethan, don’t trust Vivian. She is coming to you because she knows the final evidence is missing.””*

I looked up.

Vivian noticed my expression.

“What did Lucas say?””

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly I had a new question.

If Vivian was afraid…

Who was she afraid of?
