Chapter 3: The Envelope Behind the Frame

I stared at the envelope for almost a full minute.

My first instinct was to open it.

My second was fear.

Because suddenly, I understood something.

Someone had been watching.

Someone knew things inside my home.

Someone knew I would eventually look behind that picture.

I carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a small flash drive.

No note.

No explanation.

Just the drive.

I carried it back to my desk and connected it to my computer.

One folder appeared.

The name made my stomach twist.

*“Vivian.””*

I clicked it.

There were photos.

Dozens of them.

My wife.

Maya.

Daniel.

And conversations between them.

Not written conversations.

Pictures.

Someone had been secretly documenting them.

I opened the first image.

Vivian and Daniel were sitting together at a restaurant.

Not a business meeting.

Not a casual encounter.

Their hands were touching across the table.

My chest tightened.

I opened another.

They were outside a hotel.

Another.

Daniel was handing Vivian an envelope.

I leaned closer.

The date was from three months earlier.

Three months.

While I was working sixteen-hour days.

While I believed I was building a future for our family.

My wife was living another life.

But then I saw something worse.

A document.

I opened it.

And the words on the screen made me stop breathing.

It was a legal agreement.

A custody agreement.

A plan.

My hands trembled as I read.

Vivian and Daniel had discussed taking control of my assets.

My companies.

My children.

Everything.

I whispered:

“No…”

A sound came from behind me.

I turned around.

Ethan stood in the doorway.

His face was pale.

“Daddy?””

I immediately closed the laptop.

“Why are you awake?””

He stepped closer.

“Is Mommy going to take us away?””

My heart broke.

I walked toward him.

“Why would you ask that?””

He looked down.

“Because I heard her say it.””

“Say what?””

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She said when you lose everything, we’ll have a new family.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

But I swallowed it.

Children should never carry adult pain.

I knelt beside him.

“Ethan, listen to me. No matter what happens, you and Caleb are my whole world.””

He looked at me.

“Do you promise?””

“I promise.””

He hugged me tightly.

For the first time that night, I felt like I was doing something right.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

“What are you doing awake?””

Vivian.

Ethan immediately released me.

I stood.

“Ethan had a nightmare.””

Vivian looked at him.

A long silence passed.

Then she smiled.

“Did he?””

Something about the way she said it made my skin crawl.

I stepped between them.

“He’s going back to bed.””

Vivian’s eyes moved to me.

“You’re acting strange tonight.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

She walked closer.

“Did someone say something to you?””

The question was too specific.

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?””

She smiled slightly.

“I mean, you seem suspicious.””

I forced myself to laugh.

“Long day.””

She studied me.

Then looked at Ethan.

“Go upstairs, sweetheart.””

Ethan didn’t move.

For a moment, I saw the fear return.

Then he ran upstairs.

Vivian watched him leave.

After he disappeared, she turned back to me.

“You need to be careful.””

The words were quiet.

Almost gentle.

But they felt like a threat.

“Careful of what?””

She stepped closer.

“Of believing people who pretend to love you.””

I looked at my wife.

The woman who had stood beside me for twelve years.

The woman who had just sent an innocent woman to jail.

The woman who may have been planning to destroy my family.

And I realized something.

Vivian knew.

She knew someone had told me.

She knew Ethan was afraid.

And she was trying to find out how much I knew.

The next morning, before sunrise, I received another message.

This time from Maya.

Her number.

The woman who was supposed to be in police custody.

The message contained only one line.

*“Mr. Hale, I finally found the proof of what Vivian did before she gets to your children.””*

Then another message appeared.

A photo attachment.

I opened it.

And my blood ran cold.

May you like

Because the person standing beside Maya in the picture was someone I trusted completely.

My own brother.
