Chapter 5: The Brother’s Confession
I didn’t sleep.
Not even for a minute.
Vivian’s words repeated inside my head.
“Your brother was supposed to be dead.””
By sunrise, I had convinced myself I misunderstood.
That I was exhausted.
That fear was making me imagine things.
But then I remembered her face.
She wasn’t surprised by Lucas.
She was surprised he was alive.
And that meant there was a story I had never been told.
I found Lucas again that morning.
This time, I didn’t knock.
I walked straight inside.
He looked up from his kitchen table.
“You heard.””
I stopped.
“You knew?””
Lucas closed his eyes.
“About Vivian?””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“About you being supposed to be dead.””
The color left his face.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he sat down.
“I guess it was only a matter of time.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Explain.””
Lucas looked exhausted.
“Two years ago, I discovered something.””
“What?””
“Vivian was moving money from your company.””
I stared at him.
“The same thing Maya found?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I tried.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
“I called you.””
I shook my head.
“I never got a call.””
“I know.””
Lucas looked at the floor.
“Because someone intercepted it.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
“Daniel.””
I walked away.
Every revelation felt like another piece of my life breaking apart.
Lucas continued.
“Your mother found out too.””
“My mother?””
“She helped me collect evidence.””
I looked back.
“Then what happened?””
Lucas was silent.
Finally, he said:
“Someone tried to kill me.””
The room went cold.
“What?””
“I was driving home after meeting your mother. A truck crossed into my lane.””
I stared at him.
“But you’re alive.””
“Barely.””
He touched a scar near his shoulder.
“I woke up in a hospital under a different name.””
“Why?””
“Because the person who tried to kill me thought I died.””
My mind raced.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Lucas looked at me.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Vivian?””
“Of everyone.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I understood.
My own home had become a place where secrets lived.
Later that day, I met Maya.
Lucas arranged the meeting at a small café far from my house.
When she walked in, I barely recognized her.
The confident woman who used to sing while making breakfast for my children looked exhausted.
She stood when she saw me.
“Mr. Hale.””
I immediately stood.
“Maya.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For not protecting your boys.””
The words surprised me.
“You protected them more than anyone.””
She shook her head.
“I should have told you sooner.””
“Tell me everything.””
She sat down.
For the next hour, Maya explained.
She had worked for Vivian for years.
At first, Vivian seemed kind.
Generous.
She bought gifts for the boys.
Remembered birthdays.
Acted like the perfect mother.
But slowly, things changed.
“She started becoming different after Daniel came around,” Maya said.
I looked down.
“Different how?””
“She became obsessed with control.””
Maya’s voice lowered.
“She would test people.””
“Test?””
“She would hide things and accuse employees of stealing.””
I felt sick.
“She did this before?””
Maya nodded.
“Three people lost their jobs.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t anyone report her?””
“Because nobody had proof.””
Then Maya reached into her bag.
She placed a small recorder on the table.
“What is this?””
“The reason Vivian wanted me gone.””
My hand moved toward it.
“What’s on here?””
Maya looked around.
“Her voice.””
I pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then Vivian’s voice.
Clear.
Cold.
“If Maya discovers the account records, she becomes a problem.””
My blood ran cold.
Another voice answered.
Daniel.
“What about Ethan?””
Vivian laughed softly.
“He’s a child. He won’t understand.””
The recording continued.
Then came the sentence that made my hands shake.
“She’ll take the blame. Everyone always believes the quiet ones are guilty.””
I stopped the recording.
I couldn’t listen anymore.
Maya looked at me.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Vivian didn’t only plan to frame me.””
“What else?””
Maya leaned forward.
“She planned to make your children disappear.””
The world seemed to stop.
“What do you mean?””
“She has been creating evidence that you are unstable.””
My heart pounded.
“She wants custody.””
Maya nodded.
“And she has someone ready to testify against you.””
“Who?””
Maya looked terrified.
Then she whispered:
“The person you trust most.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“Who?””
Maya didn’t answer.
Because at that exact moment, my phone rang.
May you like
The screen showed the name.
*Daniel.*
