Chapter 11: The Sister in the Shadows
I didn’t say anything.
I couldn’t.
The woman on the phone waited.
Like she knew silence was the only possible response.
“My father never mentioned you.””
“I know.””
Her voice sounded tired.
“Your father spent years trying to hide my existence.””
I looked at Lucas.
He looked shocked.
Even he didn’t know.
“Why are you calling me?””
“Because Vivian found me before you did.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“She contacted me six months ago.””
“Why?””
“To make a deal.””
I stood.
“What kind of deal?””
Rebecca paused.
“She wanted me to testify against you.””
The room became silent.
“She wanted you to say I was unstable?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
Another piece.
Another betrayal.
“What did she offer you?””
“Money.””
“How much?””
“Ten million dollars.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I finally understood how far Vivian was willing to go.
“She wanted you to help destroy me.””
“Yes.””
“Why are you helping me now?””
Rebecca didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Because I realized she was going to destroy everyone.””
I looked at Lucas.
Everyone.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere safe.””
“Can I meet you?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
“Today.””
“No.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Not today.””
“Why?””
“Because Vivian knows you’re looking for answers.””
I looked toward the window.
The feeling of being watched returned.
“How do you know?””
“Because she told me.””
My stomach dropped.
“She contacted you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Last night.””
I gripped the phone.
“What did she say?””
Rebecca whispered:
“She said, ‘Ethan is finally starting to understand.’”
The words sent chills through me.
“She knew?””
“She knows everything.””
That afternoon, I went to the courthouse.
The custody hearing was scheduled as an emergency review.
Vivian arrived with her lawyer.
She looked calm.
Confident.
Like she had already won.
I sat across from her.
She looked at me.
And smiled.
Not cruelly.
Almost sadly.
That was worse.
Because she wanted everyone else to see her as the victim.
The judge reviewed the documents.
Vivian’s lawyer spoke first.
“My client is concerned about Mr. Hale’s recent behavior.””
The words sounded professional.
But I knew what they were.
A weapon.
“He has become paranoid,” the lawyer continued.
“He accuses people around him without evidence.””
I looked at Vivian.
She didn’t even blink.
Then my lawyer presented the security footage.
The room changed.
The video of Vivian planting the jewelry.
Her lawyer objected immediately.
“This footage is incomplete.””
“No,” I said.
My voice echoed.
“It’s exactly what happened.””
The judge looked at me.
“Mr. Hale, you will have a chance to speak.””
I sat down.
Then Vivian’s lawyer presented their evidence.
My arguments with Vivian.
My exhaustion.
My angry messages.
Everything designed to make me look unstable.
Then they presented the statement.
The one signed by Lucas.
My heart sank.
The judge looked at the paper.
“Mr. Hale, do you know this person?””
I stood.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
“My brother.””
“And he believes you are mentally unstable?””
I looked at the signature.
Then at Vivian.
She watched me carefully.
Waiting.
I took a breath.
“My brother believes my wife threatened my children.””
The courtroom went quiet.
Vivian’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
The judge frowned.
“Is there evidence?””
Before I could answer, the courtroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Lucas walked in.
My brother.
The man whose signature was being used against me.
The man Vivian thought she controlled.
The judge looked at him.
“Mr. Hale?””
Lucas stepped forward.
“I need to correct my statement.””
Vivian stood.
“Lucas, don’t.””
Everyone heard it.
The fear in her voice.
Lucas looked at her.
And for the first time, he didn’t look afraid.
“I lied.””
The room exploded with whispers.
The judge raised a hand.
“Explain.””
Lucas looked directly at me.
“I signed that document because Vivian threatened my nephews.””
Vivian’s face went pale.
Lucas continued.
“She told me if I refused, she would make Ethan look dangerous and take the children away.””
My breathing slowed.
He was telling the truth.
Then Lucas pulled out a recorder.
“I also recorded her.””
Vivian froze.
The judge looked at the device.
“What is on that recording?””
Lucas pressed play.
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then Vivian’s voice filled the courtroom.
“You have two choices, Lucas.””
Everyone stopped moving.
“Help me take Ethan down.””
A pause.
“Or watch his children lose their father.””
The courtroom went silent.
Vivian stood completely still.
For the first time, her mask disappeared.
The hearing was postponed immediately.
Outside the courtroom, reporters gathered.
But before we could leave, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Rebecca.
One sentence.
*“Ethan, you need to know why Vivian chose you.””*
Then a second message appeared.
A photo.
A young Vivian.
Standing beside my father.
May you like
And beside them was a baby.
Me.
