Chapter 4: The Person I Never Suspected
The picture on my phone stayed open for almost a minute.
I couldn’t blink.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because standing beside Maya in that photograph was my brother, Lucas.
My younger brother.
The same person who had hugged my children the week before.
The same person who had sat across from me at Thanksgiving and told me, “Family is the only thing that matters.””
His arm was around Maya’s shoulder.
And both of them looked terrified.
The photo had been taken inside a small room I didn’t recognize.
Behind them was a whiteboard covered with notes.
Dates.
Names.
Documents.
I zoomed in.
One name appeared again and again.
Vivian.
My first thought was impossible.
Lucas wouldn’t betray me.
Not him.
Not after everything we had survived together.
When our father died, Lucas was the one who stayed with me in the hospital hallway.
When I built my first medical facility, he was the one who worked nights helping me organize paperwork.
He wasn’t just my brother.
He was the only person in my family I thought I could trust completely.
But then I remembered the message.
“Maya finally found the proof of what Vivian did.””
Not what Vivian planned.
Not what Vivian wanted.
What she did.
I grabbed my jacket and left my office.
I needed answers.
I found Lucas at his apartment twenty minutes later.
He opened the door wearing sweatpants and a tired expression.
Then he saw my face.
The expression disappeared.
“Ethan?””
I stepped inside.
“Why is Maya with you?””
His eyes changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
That tiny hesitation told me everything.
“You saw the picture.””
It wasn’t a question.
I closed the door behind me.
“Start explaining.””
Lucas looked away.
“Ethan, you need to calm down.””
“Don’t tell me to calm down.””
My voice was louder than I intended.
“My wife had our nanny arrested. My son told me she did it on purpose. I found evidence that Vivian and Daniel have been planning something against me. And now I find a picture of Maya with you.””
Lucas ran his hand through his hair.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.””
That sentence hurt more than the picture.
“What does that mean?””
He walked toward the kitchen.
“Sit down.””
“I’m not sitting down until you tell me what’s happening.””
Lucas looked at me.
For the first time in years, he looked afraid.
“Maya didn’t steal anything.””
“I know.””
His eyebrows lifted.
“You know?””
“I saw the security footage.””
A heavy silence filled the room.
Then Lucas whispered:
“Then you know Vivian set her up.””
I stared at him.
“How do you know?””
He opened a drawer and pulled out a folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Photos.
Bank records.
I grabbed the first page.
My stomach tightened.
Payments.
From an account connected to Vivian.
Sent to someone I didn’t recognize.
“What is this?””
Lucas sat down.
“This is why Maya came to me.””
“When?””
“Three months ago.””
I looked up.
“Three months?””
He nodded.
“She found something strange while organizing Vivian’s office.””
My grip tightened around the papers.
“What did she find?””
“A hidden folder.””
“What was inside?””
Lucas looked at me carefully.
“Evidence that Vivian had been moving money.””
“How much?””
“Over two million dollars.””
I felt a wave of disbelief.
“Why?””
Lucas pushed another document toward me.
I read it.
My face went numb.
It was a transfer agreement.
A company acquisition.
My company.
Or at least, an attempt to take control of it.
“She was planning to remove you,” Lucas said quietly.
“Remove me?””
“She was working with Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“Daniel.””
Lucas nodded.
“They wanted your board to believe you were mentally unstable. They were collecting information to make it look like you were making reckless decisions.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“My wife was trying to destroy me.””
Lucas didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The truth was already sitting between us.
Then I noticed something.
A date.
The first payment had been made one week after I changed my will.
I looked up.
“How did Vivian know about my will?””
Lucas became quiet.
And that silence scared me.
“Lucas.””
He swallowed.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
“Maya wasn’t the only person watching Vivian.””
I froze.
“What are you talking about?””
“She knew someone was close to exposing her.””
“Who?””
Lucas looked at me.
“Your mother.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother died two years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Lucas pulled out another photo.
It showed an elderly woman entering a building.
My mother.
The date was one month before she died.
I stared at it.
“She was investigating Vivian?””
Lucas nodded.
“She suspected something was wrong.””
I felt dizzy.
My mother had died suddenly.
Everyone said it was a heart attack.
But now every piece of my life felt like it had been carefully rearranged by someone else.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Lucas looked away.
“Because I didn’t know who to trust.””
That answer hurt.
Because I understood it.
I had asked myself the same question all night.
When I returned home, the house was quiet.
Too quiet.
I walked upstairs.
Ethan and Caleb were asleep.
I stood in their doorway for a long time.
Watching them breathe.
Watching their small bodies move beneath the blankets.
I wondered how long they had been scared.
How long they had known something was wrong.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
Vivian.
“You went somewhere.””
I turned.
She stood in the hallway wearing a silk robe.
Calm.
Beautiful.
Dangerous.
“I went for a drive.””
She smiled.
“You’re a terrible liar.””
I said nothing.
She walked closer.
“Did Lucas tell you?””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Her smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
Then it returned.
“You heard me.””
I stared at her.
“How do you know I saw Lucas?””
Vivian looked at the bedroom door.
Then back at me.
“Because Lucas has always been weak.””
The way she said his name made my stomach turn.
“You’ve known?””
“I know everything happening in my house.””
My voice lowered.
“What did you do, Vivian?””
She stepped closer.
“You should ask yourself a better question.””
“Which is?””
“Why did everyone you love eventually betray you?””
The words hit harder than they should have.
Because they were designed to.
She wanted me angry.
Confused.
Alone.
But she made one mistake.
She forgot I had spent years solving impossible problems.
And now she was the problem.
I looked directly into her eyes.
“Where is Daniel?””
For the first time all night, Vivian’s expression changed.
Fear.
Tiny.
But real.
And then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went pale.
She answered.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“No. That’s impossible.””
She turned away.
I watched her carefully.
Because whatever she heard had scared her.
When she hung up, she looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your brother was supposed to be dead.””
