Chapter 8: The Woman Behind Martha’s Plan
The woman standing in the doorway looked uncomfortable.
Unlike Martha, she didn’t look powerful.
She looked guilty.
She held a purse tightly against her chest.
Nick stared.
“Who is she?””
Martha didn’t answer.
That alone was enough.
Because Martha always had an answer.
Always.
The woman walked inside.
“I’m sorry.””
Her voice trembled.
“I should have come sooner.””
Richard nodded.
“You should have.””
Martha’s face hardened.
“You betrayed me.””
The woman looked at her.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I stopped protecting you.””
Nick stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at him.
“My name is Susan Miller.””
Then she looked at Martha.
“I was your mother’s assistant for twelve years.””
Nick frowned.
“Assistant?””
Susan nodded.
“I handled her schedule. Her calls. Her meetings.””
Richard added:
“And her secrets.””
Martha glared.
“Be careful.””
Susan laughed sadly.
“That’s what you always said.””
She looked around the room.
“Be careful. Don’t ask questions. Don’t tell anyone.””
Nick’s expression changed.
“You knew?””
Susan lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
A heavy silence followed.
“You knew she was trying to destroy my marriage?””
Susan nodded.
“I knew she was trying to control it.””
Nick looked hurt.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Susan looked at Martha.
“Because I was afraid.””
Martha smiled coldly.
“She’s always been weak.””
Susan looked back at her.
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“I was trapped.””
That surprised everyone.
Even Martha.
Susan opened her purse.
“I kept copies.””
She placed a small folder on the table.
Nick looked at it.
“What is this?””
“Everything.””
Martha stepped forward.
“No.””
Susan continued.
“Emails. Bank records. Conversations.””
Nick picked it up.
His hands tightened.
“Why now?””
Susan looked at me.
“Because when she cut your hair tonight…”
She paused.
“Something changed.””
I looked down.
Susan continued.
“I spent years watching Martha hurt people quietly.””
Her eyes moved to Nick.
“But tonight she wanted everyone to see it.””
Martha’s face became angry.
“You ungrateful woman.””
Susan looked at her.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I was grateful once.””
Then she whispered:
“But I’m not anymore.””
Nick opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages between Martha and someone named “C.””
His face changed.
“C.””
Caroline looked nervous.
“That’s not me.””
Nick read more.
Then he looked at Martha.
“Who is C?””
Martha stayed silent.
Susan answered.
“Your mother created that account to communicate with Caroline’s parents.””
Nick stared.
“She was planning everything through email?””
“Yes.””
Susan looked at me.
“She wanted you gone before the wedding.””
My stomach tightened.
“Gone how?””
Susan hesitated.
Then she said:
“She planned to make everyone believe you cheated.””
The room erupted.
Nick looked at me immediately.
Not with suspicion.
With pain.
Because he realized what she had tried to do.
Susan continued.
“She had someone create fake messages. Fake photos.””
I felt cold.
“She wanted to show Nick evidence on the wedding day.””
The room went silent.
“But she failed.””
Nick looked at Martha.
“Why?””
Martha didn’t answer.
Susan did.
“Because she found out you were planning something.””
Nick frowned.
“What?””
Susan looked at him.
“The reason she rushed tonight.””
Everyone waited.
Nick looked confused.
“What was I planning?””
Susan looked at me.
Then at him.
“She found out about your surprise.””
My heart stopped.
Nick looked at me.
“What surprise?””
Susan smiled sadly.
“The one your father helped you arrange.””
I stared.
“My father?””
Richard looked surprised too.
Susan nodded.
“Your father knew you loved her.””
She pointed at me.
“He wanted to make sure Martha couldn’t ruin your wedding.””
Nick looked overwhelmed.
“What did he do?””
Susan opened another envelope.
“He left something for you.””
Nick slowly took it.
Inside was a small key.
No explanation.
No note.
Just a key.
Richard looked at it.
“I know that key.””
Everyone turned.
“You do?””
Richard nodded.
“That opens your father’s private storage room.””
Nick’s face changed.
“My father had a storage room?””
Susan nodded.
“And inside is the reason Martha was desperate to stop this wedding.””
Martha suddenly moved.
Fast.
She grabbed the key from Nick’s hand.
Everyone gasped.
Nick pulled it back.
“Mom!””
For the first time, Martha looked truly desperate.
“Don’t open it.””
The room froze.
Because Martha had finally admitted something.
There was something inside.
Something she feared.
Nick stared at her.
“What is in that room?””
Martha said nothing.
Nick stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
Her lips trembled.
Then she whispered:
“Something your father should have destroyed.””
Nobody spoke.
Nick looked at the key.
Then at the door.
Because suddenly the wedding wasn’t about a ruined hairstyle.
It wasn’t about a cruel mother-in-law.
May you like
It was about a secret waiting in a locked room.
A secret that could destroy the entire family.
