Chapter 2: The Woman Martha Feared
The person standing at the entrance wasn’t someone I recognized.
She was an older woman wearing a simple blue coat.
Her gray hair was pulled back neatly, and she carried a small leather bag.
She didn’t look powerful.
She didn’t look threatening.
But Martha looked terrified.
That was the part I couldn’t understand.
My mother-in-law had spent years making everyone else uncomfortable.
She was the person who controlled every room she entered.
Yet now she looked like she wanted to disappear.
“Who is that?”” Lily whispered beside me.
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Nick walked toward the woman.
“Thank you for coming.””
The woman nodded.
“I almost didn’t.””
Her voice was soft, but the entire room heard her.
Martha took a step backward.
“No.””
Just one word.
But it carried fear.
The woman looked at her.
“Martha.””
My mother-in-law’s face tightened.
“Why are you here?””
Nick lifted the microphone.
“Because everyone deserves to know the truth.””
Martha immediately moved forward.
“Nick, don’t do this.””
He looked at her.
“Don’t do what? Tell people who you really are?””
The room became uncomfortable.
Guests looked at each other.
Nobody knew what was happening.
But everyone knew it was bigger than a haircut.
I stood frozen.
My wedding dress was still beautiful.
The flowers were still in my hair.
The decorations were still perfect.
But the entire night had become something else.
A courtroom.
And everyone was waiting for the evidence.
The older woman stepped closer.
“My name is Eleanor Blake.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Martha reacted like she had been slapped.
Nick continued.
“Eleanor worked with my father years ago.””
Martha’s expression changed.
“Nick, stop.””
“No.””
His voice shook slightly.
“But I should have asked questions years ago.””
He looked at me.
“I should have protected you sooner.””
My heart tightened.
“Nick…”
He walked closer and took my hand.
“I left because I needed to bring her here.””
Martha laughed nervously.
“This is ridiculous.””
Eleanor looked at her.
“You always did like pretending nothing happened.””
The room went silent.
Martha’s confidence cracked.
“What are you talking about?””
Eleanor opened her leather bag.
“I brought something.””
She pulled out a small envelope.
Martha immediately stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Nick blocked her.
“No.””
The woman handed it to him.
“I kept these because I knew one day someone would need proof.””
Nick opened the envelope.
Inside were several photographs.
He looked at them.
Then his face changed.
I had never seen Nick look so hurt.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer immediately.
He handed the pictures to me.
The first one showed Martha sitting at a restaurant.
Across from her was a young woman.
Caroline.
My stomach dropped.
The second picture showed Martha holding documents.
The third showed a message on a phone screen.
I read the words.
“Once Nick realizes she doesn’t belong in our world, he’ll come back to Caroline.””
My hands started shaking.
Martha stepped forward.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
Nick looked at her.
“You tried to break us apart.””
“I was protecting you.””
“No.””
His voice became louder.
“You were controlling me.””
Martha’s eyes narrowed.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Eleanor spoke.
“I do.””
Everyone looked at her.
She took a breath.
“Because I was there when she started planning it.””
The room erupted in whispers.
Martha looked furious.
“You have no right.””
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“I have every right.””
Nick stared at her.
“What else did she do?””
Eleanor looked down.
For a moment, she seemed unsure.
Then she said:
“She didn’t just want Caroline to marry you.””
Martha’s face went pale.
“She wanted your marriage destroyed.””
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Nick looked at Eleanor.
“Tell me.””
The older woman slowly opened her bag again.
This time, she pulled out a small folder.
“Martha made one mistake.””
She placed the folder in Nick’s hands.
“She thought nobody would ever find the woman she paid to help her.””
Martha’s mouth opened.
“What woman?””
Eleanor looked directly at her.
“The woman who was supposed to ruin your wife’s reputation before the wedding.””
The entire room went silent.
I stared at Martha.
My voice barely came out.
“You were planning something else?””
Martha didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because for the first time, she wasn’t pretending.
She looked caught.
Nick opened the folder.
His eyes moved across the pages.
Then he looked at his mother.
“Tell me this isn’t real.””
Martha said nothing.
Nick’s jaw tightened.
“Mom.””
Still nothing.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Nick answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
His expression changed instantly.
“Wait… what?””
He looked at me.
Then at Martha.
The person on the phone said something that made Nick step back.
Because whoever was calling wasn’t bringing bad news.
May you like
They were bringing a secret.
A secret that would explain why Martha had been so desperate to destroy me.
