Chapter 4: The Recording That Changed Everything
“I know how to make sure that girl never becomes part of this family.””
Martha’s own voice filled the reception hall.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
The recording continued.
“I’ve already started. Nick is emotional. He thinks love is enough. But eventually, he’ll understand that people like us don’t marry people like her.””
My stomach twisted.
People like us.
People like her.
Four words that explained years of cold smiles and hidden insults.
Nick stood beside me, frozen.
His eyes were fixed on his mother.
Not with anger.
Not even hatred.
With disappointment.
And somehow, that hurt more.
The recording continued.
“I just need one mistake. One scandal. One reason for him to question her.””
Caroline’s voice appeared faintly in the background.
“Martha, are you sure this is necessary?””
Martha laughed.
“Caroline, trust me. Men like Nick don’t leave because someone hurts them. They leave because they become embarrassed.””
A wave of shock moved through the guests.
I felt Lily grab my arm.
“She planned this?””
I couldn’t answer.
I was still trying to understand how someone could spend years pretending to care while secretly planning to destroy me.
The recording stopped.
Silence returned.
Martha looked around the room.
Then she did something I never expected.
She smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“You’re all acting like I committed some horrible crime.””
Nick stared at her.
“You tried to ruin my wife.””
“I tried to save you.””
“You tried to control my life.””
“No,” Martha snapped.
“I tried to protect your future.””
I stepped forward.
“My future?””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
Her eyes moved over my dress, my shortened hair, my tears.
“You really think this is about you?””
The cruelty in her voice made my skin crawl.
“This was always about Nick.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You cut my hair in front of everyone, and somehow you’re the victim?””
Martha rolled her eyes.
“It was a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
Nick’s voice was sharp.
“You brought scissors to my wedding.””
The room went quiet again.
Martha looked at him.
“I wanted to teach her something.””
Nick stepped closer.
“You humiliated her.””
“I was trying to toughen her up.””
“Mom.””
The way he said it made her stop.
For the first time, Martha looked uncertain.
Nick had spent years defending her.
Making excuses for her.
Trying to keep peace.
But tonight, she had crossed a line even he couldn’t ignore.
Caroline looked down.
“I should tell you something else.””
Martha immediately turned.
“No.””
Caroline swallowed.
“I was supposed to help her.””
My heart sank.
The room shifted toward Caroline.
She looked ashamed.
“I knew Martha wanted Nick to leave you.””
Nick’s face hardened.
“You knew?””
Caroline nodded.
“At first, I thought she was just trying to convince him to break up with you.””
“And then?””
Caroline looked at me.
“Then I realized she wasn’t trying to help me.””
Nobody spoke.
“She was using me too.””
Martha laughed.
“Don’t be ridiculous.””
Caroline looked at her.
“You promised me Nick would choose me.””
The entire room went silent.
Martha’s expression changed.
“You misunderstood.””
“No, I didn’t.””
Caroline’s voice shook.
“You told me you would convince him that I was better for him.””
She looked at Nick.
“I’m sorry.””
Nick didn’t respond.
He looked exhausted.
Like every person he trusted had suddenly become someone else.
Then Caroline pulled out another document.
“This is the part you don’t know.””
She handed it to Nick.
He read it.
His eyebrows pulled together.
“What is this?””
“A payment agreement.””
Martha’s face went pale.
Nick looked up.
“Who paid this?””
Nobody answered.
He looked again.
Then his eyes widened.
“Mom.””
The room felt colder.
“Martha,” Eleanor said quietly, “tell him.””
Martha clenched her jaw.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Nick held up the paper.
“Did you pay someone to create a fake story about my wife?””
I felt my heart stop.
“What?””
Nick looked at me.
His expression broke.
“She hired someone to spread rumors.””
My hands became numb.
“What rumors?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation scared me.
“About you.””
I stared.
“What kind of rumors?””
Martha finally exploded.
“Because they were true!””
Everyone gasped.
Nick turned toward her.
“What?””
Martha pointed at me.
“She wasn’t honest about everything.””
My chest tightened.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
She smiled.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“That innocent act.””
Nick stepped between us.
“Enough.””
But Martha kept going.
“You never told him.””
My voice became quiet.
“Told him what?””
Martha looked directly at Nick.
“Ask her where she was the night before you proposed.””
My entire body went cold.
Because I knew exactly what she was doing.
She was trying to create doubt.
Trying to make him question me.
Nick looked at me.
Not accusing.
Just confused.
“What is she talking about?””
I opened my mouth.
But before I could answer, Martha said:
“Ask her about Daniel.””
The name hit me like a wave.
Daniel.
A person from my past.
A person I hadn’t thought about in years.
Nick looked at me.
May you like
“Who is Daniel?””
And suddenly, the secret I had buried for years was standing in the middle of my wedding reception.
