Chapter 6: The Family Secret
The man placed the folder on the table.
Nobody touched it.
It sat there like a bomb waiting to explode.
Nick looked at him.
“Who are you?””
The man extended his hand.
“My name is Richard Cole.””
Nick didn’t shake it.
“What do you have to do with my family?””
Richard glanced at Martha.
“A lot more than she wants you to know.””
Martha’s voice was low.
“Richard, leave.””
He didn’t move.
“You’ve been saying that for twenty years.””
Nick looked between them.
“Twenty years?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Martha looked furious.
But underneath the anger was fear.
Real fear.
Nick noticed too.
“Mom.””
She didn’t answer.
“What is he talking about?””
Martha looked away.
That was the first time I had ever seen her avoid a question.
Richard opened the folder.
“Your father hired me as an accountant when the company was still small.””
Nick listened carefully.
“I handled the financial records.””
He placed a document on the table.
“Until I discovered money disappearing.””
Martha crossed her arms.
“You already told this story.””
Richard looked at her.
“No. I told the beginning.””
Nick picked up the paper.
“What am I looking at?””
“Transfers.””
He studied it.
“From the company?””
Richard nodded.
“Money moved into accounts your mother controlled.””
Nick looked at Martha.
She remained silent.
“How much?””
Richard hesitated.
“Over the years?””
He took a breath.
“Enough to nearly destroy your father’s company.””
Everyone reacted.
Nick looked shocked.
“But my father said the company struggled because of bad investments.””
Richard nodded.
“That’s what he was told.””
Martha finally spoke.
“You’re lying.””
Richard looked at her.
“You know I’m not.””
She stepped forward.
“You’re trying to destroy my family.””
Richard laughed sadly.
“No, Martha.””
He pointed toward Nick.
“You did that yourself.””
Nick looked like he couldn’t process anything anymore.
He turned to his mother.
“Did Dad know?””
Martha’s silence answered again.
Nick closed his eyes.
The pain on his face was worse than anger.
Because this wasn’t just about me anymore.
This was about everything he believed.
His childhood.
His parents.
His family.
I moved closer.
“Nick.””
He shook his head.
“I’m okay.””
But he wasn’t.
Nobody was.
Richard continued.
“Your father discovered the truth before he died.””
Nick looked up.
“What?””
Martha’s face changed.
Richard nodded.
“He was going to confront her.””
The room went completely still.
Nick whispered:
“When?””
“Three days before his accident.””
My heart stopped.
Nick stared.
“Accident?””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“Martha told everyone it was a tragic mistake.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Are you saying…”
Richard didn’t finish the sentence.
He didn’t need to.
Nick’s face became pale.
“My father’s death wasn’t an accident?””
Martha exploded.
“Stop!””
Everyone jumped.
Her voice cracked.
“You have no idea what you’re saying!””
Nick looked at her.
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because explanations require truth.
And Martha had spent years building her life on avoiding it.
Richard reached into the folder.
“There’s one more thing.””
He pulled out a small envelope.
“This was written by your father.””
Nick took it.
His hands were shaking.
“Why didn’t I see this before?””
“Because your mother hid it.””
Martha stepped forward.
“Don’t give him that.””
Nick looked at her.
“Why?””
No answer.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
He read silently.
Then his expression changed.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
His eyes were filled with tears.
“My father knew.””
“About everything?””
Nick nodded slowly.
“He knew about the money.””
He looked at Martha.
“And he knew about you.””
The room went quiet.
Martha whispered:
“Nick…”
But he stepped away.
The woman who had controlled him his entire life suddenly looked powerless.
Then Nick turned the page.
And his face went completely blank.
“What?””
He looked at Richard.
“Why would my father write this?””
Richard looked nervous.
“What does it say?””
Nick swallowed.
Then he read the final line aloud.
“If anything happens to me, do not trust the person who claims to love you the most.””
Everyone froze.
Because the letter wasn’t just accusing Martha.
It was warning Nick.
And at the bottom of the page was a name.
A name nobody expected.
A name that made Martha whisper:
“No… he wasn’t supposed to find that.””
Nick looked up.
“Who is this?””
He held the letter in his hand.
May you like
And slowly said the name written beneath his father’s final words.
“Caroline.””
