Thinking

Chapter 5: The Name From My Past

The room became painfully quiet.

Everyone was looking at me.

Waiting.

Judging.

Exactly what Martha wanted.

She knew how to create a moment.

She knew how to make someone feel trapped.

But she didn’t know one thing.

She didn’t know the truth.

And she definitely didn’t know that I had nothing left to hide.

I looked at Nick.

“Daniel was my older brother’s best friend.””

Martha’s smile disappeared slightly.

She had expected panic.

She didn’t get it.

Nick frowned.

“Your brother’s friend?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

The tension in his face softened.

But only slightly.

“Why didn’t I know about him?””

I looked down.

“Because Daniel died.””

The room changed instantly.

Martha blinked.

“What?””

I faced her.

“You didn’t know that, did you?””

For the first time that night, Martha looked caught off guard.

I took a breath.

“Daniel was twenty-four when he died in a car accident.””

Nick reached for my hand.

I held onto him.

“He was one of the people who helped me after my father got sick. He was like family.””

Martha’s expression tightened.

“But the messages…”

“What messages?””

She stopped.

That was the moment everyone noticed.

She didn’t know.

She had pieces of information.

Not the truth.

I looked at Nick.

“I talked to Daniel the night before you proposed because he called me.””

Nick waited.

“Why?””

“Because he knew about your proposal.””

A small smile appeared despite everything.

“He helped you pick the ring.””

Nick’s eyes widened.

“What?””

I laughed softly.

“You thought you chose that ring alone?””

For a second, the pain disappeared.

Just for a second.

Nick looked emotional.

“Daniel helped me?””

I nodded.

“He told me you were nervous.””

The room remained silent.

But this time, it wasn’t uncomfortable.

It was heartbreaking.

Martha had tried to turn a beautiful memory into a weapon.

And she failed.

Caroline whispered:

“She didn’t know.””

Eleanor looked at Martha.

“You never checked the facts.””

Martha’s face hardened.

“I knew enough.””

“No,” Nick said.

“You knew what you wanted to believe.””

That sentence landed harder than anything else.

Martha looked at him.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

Nick’s expression changed.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

She stared at him.

“I’m your mother.””

“And she’s my wife.””

The words were simple.

But they changed everything.

Martha looked around the room.

She realized she had lost control.

Then she did what people like her often do.

She attacked the weakest person.

Me.

“You think you won?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“You think because everyone feels sorry for you tonight, you belong here?””

Nick immediately stepped forward.

But I stopped him.

“No.””

He looked at me.

I shook my head.

“I want to answer her.””

The room became silent.

I walked closer to Martha.

For years, I had lowered my voice around her.

Apologized when I did nothing wrong.

Tried to earn a place she never planned to give me.

Not anymore.

“You spent eight years trying to convince me I wasn’t good enough.””

Martha stared.

“You made every room feel like I was an outsider.””

I touched my shortened hair.

“You took something important from me because you wanted to remind me that you had power.””

My voice shook.

“But you forgot something.””

“What?””

“I never needed your permission to be loved.””

Nobody spoke.

Nick looked at me with tears in his eyes.

Martha looked away.

For the first time, she had no response.

Then the doors opened.

A man in a dark suit walked in.

Everyone turned.

He looked older than Nick, probably in his late fifties.

Nick frowned.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at Martha.

And Martha’s entire body froze.

“No.””

The man walked forward.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.””

His voice was calm.

“But I think it’s time Nick knows why his mother was so desperate to keep certain secrets buried.””

Martha whispered:

“You promised.””

The man looked at her.

“I promised I wouldn’t speak until I had proof.””

He held up a folder.

“And now I do.””

Nick stepped forward.

“What proof?””

The man looked at him.

“Proof that your mother didn’t just manipulate your relationship.””

He opened the folder.

“She manipulated your entire family’s history.””

Martha’s face turned white.

May you like

And I knew.

Whatever came next was something even she was afraid of.
