Chapter 7: The Betrayal Hidden in Plain Sight

“Caroline.””

Nick’s voice was barely above a whisper.

But everyone heard it.

The entire room turned toward her.

Caroline stood near the entrance, her face frozen.

For a moment, she looked like she wanted to run.

Then she looked at Martha.

And something inside her changed.

The fear disappeared.

“I knew this would happen eventually,” Caroline said quietly.

Martha’s eyes widened.

“Don’t.””

Caroline ignored her.

Nick held up the letter.

“My father wrote your name.””

Caroline swallowed.

“I know.””

The room exploded into whispers.

Nick stared.

“You know?””

She nodded.

“I’ve known for years.””

The betrayal on Nick’s face was impossible to hide.

“You’ve known about this letter?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know why my father wrote your name?””

Caroline looked down.

Because she had an answer.

And she knew everyone would hate her for it.

“I knew because your father came to see me.””

Nick froze.

“What?””

Martha closed her eyes.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

“Caroline,” Martha said sharply, “think carefully before you destroy everything.””

Caroline looked at her.

“You already destroyed everything.””

That was the first time anyone had ever spoken to Martha without fear.

Nick stepped closer.

“When did my father meet you?””

Caroline took a breath.

“Six months before he died.””

My stomach tightened.

Six months.

This was bigger than anyone realized.

“Why?”” Nick asked.

Caroline looked at the letter.

“Because he was investigating your mother.””

Martha immediately interrupted.

“She’s lying.””

Richard stepped forward.

“No, she isn’t.””

Martha turned toward him.

“You were always weak.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“And you were always dangerous.””

Nick looked exhausted.

“Someone please tell me the truth.””

Caroline wiped her eyes.

“I owe you that.””

She looked at me.

“I owe you that too.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because Caroline had been the woman Martha wanted Nick to marry.

The woman who represented everything Martha thought I wasn’t.

But standing there, she didn’t look like an enemy.

She looked like another person who had been used.

“Your father approached my family because he was worried,” Caroline said.

“About what?””

“About your mother.””

Nick looked away.

Every new detail hurt him.

“He told me Martha had become obsessed with controlling your life.””

Caroline continued.

“He said she wanted you to marry someone who would benefit the family name.””

Nick’s jaw tightened.

“She wanted me to marry Caroline.””

Caroline nodded.

“Yes.””

Martha crossed her arms.

“And what’s wrong with that?””

Everyone stared at her.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She still didn’t understand.

Nick looked at her.

“What’s wrong with that?””

Martha sighed.

“You’re acting like I committed some terrible crime because I wanted better for you.””

“You tried to replace my wife.””

“I tried to protect your future.””

“No.””

Nick’s voice became colder.

“You tried to rewrite it.””

Martha looked hurt.

But I noticed something.

It wasn’t regret.

It was anger.

Anger that she had been caught.

Richard pointed at the folder.

“There’s more.””

Nick looked at him.

“What else?””

Richard pulled out another document.

“This is the agreement your mother made with Caroline’s family.””

Caroline looked ashamed.

“I never signed it.””

Nick opened the paper.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then he stopped.

“What is this?””

Richard answered.

“A marriage arrangement.””

The room went silent.

Nick looked at Martha.

“You arranged my marriage?””

Martha’s expression changed.

“I was trying to help.””

“You weren’t arranging a meeting.””

His voice cracked.

“You were making a decision about my life.””

Martha looked around.

“You all think I’m some villain.””

Nobody answered.

Because she was.

But nobody needed to say it.

Then Nick noticed something.

A detail on the paper.

A signature.

He looked at Caroline.

“Why is your name here?””

Caroline hesitated.

“I told you. I never signed that.””

Nick looked closer.

“It’s your signature.””

Her face went pale.

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“That’s not possible.””

Martha’s expression shifted.

A small flicker of satisfaction appeared.

I saw it.

And so did Nick.

“You knew about this?””

Martha immediately looked away.

Nick’s voice dropped.

“Mom.””

She said nothing.

“You knew.””

Martha finally snapped.

“Because someone had to fix your mistakes!””

Caroline stepped back.

“What did you do?””

Martha looked at her.

“You were supposed to cooperate.””

Caroline’s eyes widened.

“I didn’t agree to this.””

“No,” Martha said.

“But your parents did.””

The room went silent.

Caroline looked horrified.

“My parents?””

Martha smiled slightly.

“They wanted the same thing I did.””

Nick stared.

“What thing?””

Martha looked at him.

“A perfect family.””

I felt sick.

Because people like Martha always used beautiful words to hide ugly intentions.

Family.

Protection.

Tradition.

Love.

But underneath it was always control.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

Nick noticed.

“What happened?””

Richard listened for a few seconds.

Then he looked at Martha.

“She knows.””

Martha went still.

“Who?””

Richard ended the call.

“The person who helped you create all of this.””

Nobody moved.

Nick frowned.

“Who?””

Richard looked at the open entrance.

“She’s here.””

The doors slowly opened.

And the woman who walked in made Martha step backward.

Because she wasn’t a stranger.

She was someone Martha had trusted.

May you like

Someone who knew every secret.

Someone who had been helping her from the beginning.
