Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile

The reception never recovered.

Nobody danced.

Nobody ate.

Nobody knew whether they were still guests at a wedding or witnesses to a family explosion.

Nick stood near the entrance with his phone pressed to his ear.

I watched his face.

Every second seemed to reveal another piece of a truth I wasn’t ready to hear.

Finally, he lowered the phone.

“Who was that?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“I need to show you something.””

Martha immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Nick looked at her.

“You don’t get to decide anymore.””

That sentence hurt her more than any insult could have.

Because Martha was used to deciding everything.

Where Nick went.

Who he spent time with.

What kind of future he should have.

She had built her entire life around control.

And now it was slipping away.

Nick walked back to the table and picked up the folder Eleanor had brought.

“There are things I should have known.””

Martha crossed her arms.

“You’re believing strangers over your own mother?””

Nick stared at her.

“I’m believing evidence over lies.””

A few guests looked away.

Nobody wanted to admit they had always suspected something.

But I knew.

People had seen Martha’s behavior.

They had just ignored it.

Because families often protect the person causing the damage.

Nick opened the folder again.

Inside were bank records.

Messages.

Names.

Dates.

I didn’t understand everything.

But I understood enough.

Martha hadn’t just disliked me.

She had been working against me.

Months before the wedding.

“She contacted Caroline’s family,” Nick said quietly.

My stomach twisted.

Martha looked away.

“She told them you weren’t serious about me.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She finally snapped.

“Because I knew you weren’t right for him!””

Her voice echoed through the room.

“There. Are you happy? I said it.””

Nobody moved.

Martha pointed at me.

“You came from nothing. You had no connections. No money. No understanding of our family.””

My cheeks burned.

“But Nick loved me.””

Her face hardened.

“That was the problem.””

Nick looked devastated.

“The problem was that I loved someone?””

“No,” Martha said.

“The problem was that you loved someone I couldn’t control.””

Silence.

Those words exposed her more than anything else.

She didn’t want Nick happy.

She wanted Nick obedient.

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Martha has always confused love with ownership.””

Martha glared.

“You know nothing about my family.””

Eleanor smiled sadly.

“I knew your family before Nick was born.””

Everyone looked at her.

Nick frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“I was your father’s business partner.””

Martha froze.

Nick stared.

“My father never mentioned you.””

“Because your mother made sure he didn’t.””

The room became still.

I looked between them.

There was another secret.

A bigger one.

Nick’s voice lowered.

“What happened?””

Eleanor looked at Martha.

“Your father and I built that company together.””

Martha laughed bitterly.

“Don’t.””

But Eleanor continued.

“Then your mother discovered I knew about the money being moved.””

Nick’s face changed.

“What money?””

Martha’s silence answered before Eleanor did.

“Your mother had been transferring company funds into private accounts.””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Nick looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“That’s impossible.””

“I kept records,” Eleanor said.

“Your father found out.””

Martha’s eyes filled with anger.

“And you think you’re some hero?””

“No,” Eleanor replied.

“I think your son deserves the truth.””

Nick turned to his mother.

“Did Dad know?””

Martha looked away.

That was enough.

Nick stepped back.

I had never seen someone’s entire reality collapse in front of me.

The woman who had always acted untouchable was suddenly just a person.

A person with secrets.

A person who had been afraid all along.

Then another voice came from the doorway.

“Actually, there’s one more thing.””

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Caroline.

Martha’s face changed again.

Not fear this time.

Panic.

Caroline walked slowly into the room.

“I didn’t want to come here.””

Nick stared.

“Why are you here?””

She looked at Martha.

“Because I found out what she did to both of us.””

Martha whispered:

“Caroline…”

Caroline shook her head.

“No. You don’t get to call me like we’re friends anymore.””

She reached into her purse.

“I brought the final proof.””

Nick stepped toward her.

“What proof?””

Caroline looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t know what she was apologizing for.

Then she placed a small device on the table.

“A recording.””

Martha’s face turned completely white.

Because she knew exactly what was on it.

Nick pressed the button.

The room filled with Martha’s own voice.

And after hearing the first few seconds, I understood why she had cut my hair.

It was never about tradition.

It was never about jealousy.

It was about the secret she was terrified I would discover.

A secret that began with a single sentence:

“I know how to make sure that girl never becomes part of this family…”
