Chapter 9: The Enemy Nobody Saw
When the lights returned, Marcus was gone.
The room was empty.
No footsteps.
No movement.
Nothing.
Just me standing there with documents that could destroy everything I thought I knew.
I ran outside.
My car was still there.
But someone had left something on the windshield.
A small envelope.
My name was written on it.
I didn’t open it immediately.
Because I already knew.
This entire nightmare had started with a letter.
Another letter.
Another secret.
I drove back to Rachel’s house.
Daniel was waiting outside.
“You found him.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He frowned.
“Knew what?””
“That Marcus was alive.””
His face changed.
“No.””
I handed him the files.
He read quickly.
Then looked up.
“This is bad.””
“It gets worse.””
I showed him the payment records.
Vanessa.
Marcus.
Years of transactions.
Rachel covered her mouth.
“She was spying on you?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
I looked at the envelope.
“I’m about to find out.””
Inside was a flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
Ethan,
You are closer than you realize.
But you still don’t understand the biggest lie.
Ask yourself why Vanessa wanted you to hate her.
I read it twice.
Why would Vanessa want me to hate her?
That made no sense.
Unless…
Unless Vanessa had been trying to push me away.
But why?
I plugged in the flash drive.
A video file appeared.
Recorded three weeks before the wedding.
Vanessa appeared on screen.
My chest tightened.
She was sitting alone.
Crying.
Not pretending.
Actually crying.
“If Ethan sees this, I failed.””
I froze.
The video continued.
“I know what people think of me. I know what I did today looks unforgivable.””
She wiped her face.
“But I couldn’t tell him the truth.””
Daniel leaned closer.
The video continued.
“Marcus threatened Lily.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“He told me if I didn’t marry Ethan, he would take Lily away.””
I stopped breathing.
The woman who had destroyed my wedding.
The woman who had hurt my daughter.
Was being controlled?
The video continued.
“I tried to make Ethan hate me.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“I thought if he hated me, he would leave. I thought he would take Lily somewhere safe.””
My hands shook.
Then came the part I wasn’t prepared for.
“I knew I had to make it believable.””
Vanessa looked down.
“That’s why I pushed Lily.””
My stomach turned.
The room became silent.
Rachel whispered:
“She hurt her on purpose?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I was trying to understand something impossible.
Vanessa had been trying to save Lily.
But she had done the one thing no one could forgive.
She had broken a child to prove a point.
The video continued.
“I’m sorry, Lily.””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“I’m sorry I made you feel unwanted.””
Then the screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Daniel said:
“She was telling the truth?””
I looked at the files.
The payments.
The threats.
The messages.
Everything connected.
Almost.
But one question remained.
Why did Marcus want Lily?
I opened the last document on the flash drive.
It was a scanned letter.
From Emily.
My heart stopped.
Because this letter was not written to me.
It was written to Marcus.
The first line read:
“Marcus, if you ever come near my daughter again, Ethan will know everything.””
I read further.
And then I saw the sentence that explained everything.
“Lily is not valuable because of her inheritance.””
I frowned.
“Then why?””
The next line answered it.
“Lily is valuable because she is the only person who can expose what you did.””
I looked up.
Daniel stared at me.
“What did Marcus do?””
I didn’t know.
But I knew one thing.
The wedding wasn’t the beginning of this nightmare.
It was the final move in a plan that started years ago.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered:
“Ethan.””
Her voice sounded broken.
“Marcus has Lily.””
Everything stopped.
“What?””
“I tried to stop him.””
I stood immediately.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“I know you’ll never forgive me.””
Her voice cracked.
“But please…”
“Save her.””
The call ended.
And somewhere in the distance, a car door slammed.
Because Marcus Hale had taken my daughter.

And this time…
I wasn’t letting anyone stand between me and bringing her home.
