Chapter 7: The Voice From the Past

I don’t remember the drive home.

I remember the traffic lights.

I remember my hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly my fingers hurt.

I remember the sound of Rachel’s voice repeating the same words over and over.

She said her name was Emily.

That was impossible.

My wife had been dead for four years.

There was no explanation.

No logical explanation.

And yet, when I walked through Rachel’s front door and saw Lily sitting on the couch, holding a glass of water with both hands, I knew something had happened.

Something bigger than Vanessa.

Something bigger than the wedding.

Something that had been hidden from me for years.

“Daddy?””

Lily stood immediately.

I crossed the room and pulled her into my arms.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded against my shoulder.

“I’m okay.””

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

Rachel looked at me.

“She was playing in the backyard. Her phone rang.””

I frowned.

“Her phone?””

The phone had been an old one I gave Lily for emergencies only. It could only call a few approved numbers.

Rachel handed it to me.

“The caller ID showed ‘Unknown.’”

I looked at Lily.

“What did the person say?””

My daughter hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“She said she was sorry.””

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

Lily looked down.

“She said, ‘I know this is confusing, but I needed to hear your voice.’”

My hands went cold.

“Did she say her name?””

Lily nodded.

“Emily.””

The room went silent.

Rachel sat down slowly.

“I thought maybe it was a prank.””

“It wasn’t,” Lily said.

I looked at her.

“How do you know?””

She touched the bracelet on her wrist.

The one Vanessa had given her.

“She knew about this.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She said, ‘You’re still wearing the bracelet I gave you when you were four.’”

My heart stopped.

Vanessa.

The bracelet.

Emily.

Too many pieces.

Too many impossible connections.

I took Lily upstairs and stayed with her until she fell asleep.

Then I went downstairs.

Rachel and Daniel were waiting.

“I need answers.””

Daniel nodded.

“We all do.””

I placed the birth record on the table.

“Emily knew.””

Rachel picked it up.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she looked at me.

“Ethan…”

“What?””

Her expression changed.

“This isn’t what you think.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Did you read the entire document?””

I frowned.

“Yes.””

“No, you read the first part.””

She turned the page.

“There’s a second section.””

My hands shook as I grabbed it.

The first line was the same.

Lily’s biological father is not who Ethan believes.

But beneath it was something I hadn’t noticed.

A paragraph.

A statement.

A legal note.

I read it.

Then I felt my knees weaken.

Because the truth wasn’t what Vanessa wanted me to believe.

It was something much more complicated.

Emily had filed the amendment because Lily’s biological father had contacted her.

Not because Emily had betrayed me.

Because she was protecting Lily.

The name at the bottom of the document made my heart stop.

“Marcus Hale.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Who is that?””

I stared at the name.

Because I knew it.

Everyone in our town knew it.

Marcus Hale was a wealthy businessman.

A man who had been investigated years ago for financial fraud.

A man who had disappeared from public life.

A man who had once been obsessed with Emily before she met me.

Rachel looked at me.

“You knew him?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

I swallowed.

“He was Emily’s college friend.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“And Lily?””

I read the next sentence.

“Biological father rights terminated upon documented abandonment and refusal of parental responsibility.””

I exhaled.

The truth finally began to make sense.

Emily hadn’t hidden Lily’s identity because she didn’t trust me.

She had hidden it because she was afraid of Marcus.

But why was Vanessa involved?

Then I noticed something.

A date.

The amendment had been filed three months before Emily died.

Three months.

The same time Vanessa had suddenly become close to our family.

I looked at Daniel.

“Vanessa knew.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“She knew about Marcus?””

“She knew everything.””

I grabbed my phone.

I needed to confront her.

But before I could call, a message appeared.

Unknown number.

My blood ran cold.

The message contained one sentence.

“You’re finally reading the truth Emily left behind.””

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

I opened it.

It was a picture of Lily sleeping.

Taken recently.

Inside Rachel’s house.

My stomach dropped.

Someone had been watching her.

I immediately stood.

“Everyone stay here.””

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“No.””

“Someone took a picture of my daughter.””

“We don’t know who.””

I stared at the screen.

The photo had been taken from outside the window.

The person was close.

Too close.

Then another message arrived.

This time, only five words.

“Ask Vanessa about Marcus Hale.””

I looked at Daniel.

And for the first time, I wondered if Vanessa had been afraid of something.

May you like

Not because she was guilty.

But because someone else had been controlling her.
