Chapter 13: The Child Emily Never Forgot

The photograph stayed on my kitchen table for three days.

I didn’t touch it.

I didn’t show Lily.

I didn’t tell Rachel.

I didn’t even tell Daniel.

Because sometimes the hardest truths are the ones you don’t want to become real.

I kept hoping that if I ignored the picture long enough, it would somehow lose its meaning.

It didn’t.

Every morning, I walked past it.

Every night, I stared at it.

Emily.

Marcus.

A baby.

And a name written on the back.

*Noah Hale.*

I knew that name.

Not personally.

But I had seen it before.

Years ago.

In old newspaper articles about Marcus.

A child he had never publicly acknowledged.

A child people believed had disappeared.

On the fourth day, Daniel found me sitting at the table.

He looked at the photograph.

Then at me.

“You found something.””

I nodded.

“Another secret.””

He picked it up carefully.

“Who is Noah?””

I looked out the window.

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.””

Daniel studied the photo.

“Ethan.””

“What?””

“Emily was protecting people.””

I looked at him.

“First Lily. Now this child.””

He nodded.

“Maybe the question isn’t what Emily hid.””

“Then what?””

“Who was she protecting them from?””

I already knew the answer.

Marcus.

But something bothered me.

Marcus had wanted Lily because of evidence.

Because of inheritance.

Because of revenge.

But Noah?

Why would Emily hide another child?

Why would Marcus allow it?

Unless…

I grabbed my phone.

“I need to find someone.””

The name belonged to an old woman named Clara Bennett.

Emily’s former neighbor.

The woman who lived three houses down from us when Lily was born.

I hadn’t spoken to her in years.

When she opened the door, she immediately recognized me.

“Ethan?””

Her eyes moved behind me.

“Where’s Emily?””

The question hurt.

“She passed away.””

Her expression fell.

“Oh.””

A long silence followed.

Then she looked at the photograph in my hand.

Her face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

My heart started beating faster.

“You know them?””

Clara looked around nervously.

“Come inside.””

She closed the door behind me.

That alone told me enough.

“You knew about Noah.””

She sat down slowly.

“Yes.””

“How?””

She folded her hands.

“Because Emily asked me to protect him.””

My breathing stopped.

“Protect him from who?””

She looked at me.

“Marcus.””

I felt the answer coming.

But hearing it still hurt.

“What happened?””

Clara sighed.

“Emily discovered Marcus wasn’t just dishonest.””

She looked at the photo.

“He was dangerous.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus believed people belonged to him.””

The words sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Vanessa had said something similar.

Clara continued.

“Noah was Marcus’s son.””

“I know.””

“But he was also his victim.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

She stood and walked toward an old cabinet.

From inside, she pulled a folder.

“He was born with health problems.””

She handed me medical records.

“Marcus blamed him.””

My stomach turned.

“He blamed a child?””

“He blamed anyone who made him feel weak.””

I looked through the documents.

Noah had been moved between hospitals.

Different names.

Different addresses.

Someone had been hiding him.

Emily.

“She found out Marcus was neglecting him,” Clara said.

“She tried to help.””

I stared at the papers.

“And Marcus?””

“He threatened her.””

My jaw tightened.

“He told Emily if she interfered, he would make sure she lost Lily too.””

The room became silent.

Emily wasn’t hiding secrets.

She was fighting a war.

A war I never knew existed.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Clara’s eyes softened.

“Because she knew you.””

“What?””

“She knew you would run toward danger.””

I looked away.

“She was right.””

Clara nodded.

“She wanted you to protect Lily, not chase Marcus.””

I closed the folder.

“Where is Noah now?””

Clara hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Clara.””

“He’s alive.””

I exhaled.

“But?””

She looked down.

“He disappeared after Marcus went to prison.””

My heart sank.

“Someone took him?””

“No.””

She whispered.

“He left.””

“Why?””

“Because he found out the truth.””

I stared.

“What truth?””

Clara looked at me.

“That Marcus wasn’t the only person who abandoned him.””

I felt confused.

“What does that mean?””

Before she answered, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

A man’s voice came through.

“Ethan.””

I froze.

Because I recognized it.

Not from memory.

From the photograph.

“Noah?””

Silence.

Then:

“You found the picture.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?””

“I need to know something first.””

“What?””

“Did Emily ever tell you why she chose you?””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Noah’s voice became quieter.

“Because I think she chose you for both of us.””

The call ended.

And I realized something.

Emily’s final secret wasn’t about Marcus.

May you like

It was about the family she built…

And the children she refused to abandon.
