Thinking

Chapter 10: The Price of the Truth

The moment Vanessa’s call ended, I felt something inside me disappear.

Fear.

Not because I wasn’t afraid.

I was terrified.

But fear was no longer the strongest thing I felt.

A father doesn’t think clearly when someone takes his child.

He doesn’t think about consequences.

He doesn’t think about danger.

He only thinks about one thing.

Getting his daughter back.

I grabbed my jacket and ran toward the front door.

Daniel followed.

“Ethan, wait.””

“No.””

“We need a plan.””

“My daughter is with a man who has already threatened her.””

“I know.””

“Then what are we waiting for?””

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Because rushing in could get Lily hurt.””

Those words stopped me.

Because he was right.

And I hated that he was right.

I closed my eyes.

I saw Lily’s face.

The frosting.

The tears.

The way she asked me if I would still choose her.

I couldn’t fail her again.

“What did Vanessa say exactly?””

Daniel grabbed a notebook.

“She said Marcus has Lily.””

“Nothing else?””

“No.””

I looked at the flash drive still connected to the laptop.

The files.

The letters.

The evidence.

Everything Marcus had spent years hiding.

Then I noticed something.

A timestamp on the last file.

Created three hours ago.

Three hours.

Someone had been preparing this.

I clicked it.

A video appeared.

Not Vanessa.

Not Marcus.

Emily.

My heart stopped.

The video was shaky.

Emily looked thinner than I remembered.

She was sitting in our old house.

The same house where Lily took her first steps.

The same house where we celebrated birthdays.

Where we built our life.

“Ethan,” Emily whispered into the camera.

“If you’re seeing this, then something went wrong.””

I sat down.

I couldn’t move.

Emily looked directly at me.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

She took a deep breath.

“Marcus will tell you many things. Some of them will be true. Some of them will be lies.””

My fingers tightened.

“But the most important thing is this.””

She looked away for a moment.

“Lily was never his to take.””

A tear fell down her cheek.

“She was never a possession.””

The video shook slightly.

“Marcus believed blood was the only thing that mattered.””

Emily looked back at the camera.

“He was wrong.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Ethan, you are Lily’s father because you chose her every day.””

I covered my mouth.

Because those were the words I needed.

The words I didn’t know I needed.

Emily continued.

“But there is something you must know.””

The room became silent.

“Marcus was involved in something dangerous.””

She paused.

“Something bigger than money.””

A noise came from behind the camera.

Emily looked frightened.

Then the recording jumped.

When it returned, she was whispering.

“If Vanessa is involved, don’t trust her completely.””

I froze.

Daniel looked at me.

The video continued.

“She may have feelings for you. She may regret what she did. But she made choices.””

Emily’s expression became painful.

“And choices have consequences.””

Then the screen went black.

I stared.

Vanessa had been right.

Emily had known.

Everyone had known something except me.

Daniel looked at me.

“What now?””

I stood.

“Now we find Lily.””

The location came from Vanessa.

Not willingly.

She sent it after I agreed to meet her.

An abandoned warehouse outside the city.

The same kind of place where people disappeared in movies.

Except this wasn’t fiction.

My daughter was inside.

When we arrived, Vanessa was standing near the entrance.

Alone.

She looked nothing like the woman from the wedding.

No makeup.

No expensive dress.

No confidence.

Just a person carrying regret.

The moment she saw me, tears filled her eyes.

“I know you hate me.””

I didn’t answer.

Because hate was too simple.

What I felt was worse.

“You hurt my daughter.””

Her face broke.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You don’t get to say you know.””

She looked down.

“I thought if I made you believe I was the villain, you would leave.””

“You could have told me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

She looked at me.

“The night before the wedding.””

I remembered.

Vanessa had come to my house.

She said she needed to talk.

I had been busy with final preparations.

Lily had been excited.

I had told Vanessa:

“Can we do this after tomorrow?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I should have tried harder.””

“Yes.””

“I should have protected her.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than an excuse.

She wiped her tears.

“Marcus threatened Lily.””

“How?””

“He showed me photos.””

My body went cold.

“Photos?””

“Of her school.””

“Her playground.””

“Your house.””

She shook her head.

“He said if I didn’t follow his instructions, he would take her.””

I stared at her.

“So you married me?””

“I thought I could get close enough to find evidence.””

“And the cake?””

Her eyes closed.

“I needed you to leave me.””

I stepped closer.

“You humiliated a six-year-old child.””

“I know.””

“You made her think she wasn’t wanted.””

“I know.””

“Do you understand what that does to a child?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I know.””

For once, I believed she understood.

But understanding didn’t erase damage.

A sound came from inside the warehouse.

A small voice.

“Daddy?””

Everything stopped.

“Lily?””

I ran.

The warehouse doors opened.

And there she was.

Sitting in a chair.

Not tied up.

Not injured.

But terrified.

“Daddy!””

I crossed the room and grabbed her.

She buried her face against me.

“I knew you’d come.””

I held her tightly.

“I promised you.””

Behind me, Marcus applauded slowly.

“Well.””

I turned.

He stood in the shadows.

“You really are predictable.””

I moved in front of Lily.

“You don’t come near her.””

Marcus smiled.

“That’s exactly what Emily used to say.””

My jaw tightened.

“What do you want?””

He looked at Lily.

“I want what is mine.””

“She isn’t yours.””

Marcus tilted his head.

“You still don’t understand.””

He reached into his coat.

And pulled out a document.

“Everything started because of this.””

He held it up.

A birth agreement.

A legal contract.

Then he said:

“Before Emily died, she left Lily something worth millions.””

I stared.

“She didn’t tell you.””

“What?””

Marcus smiled.

“She knew if you found out, you would never let Lily out of your sight.””

I looked at the document.

Then at him.

“What did she leave?””

May you like

Marcus’s smile widened.

“The evidence that can destroy me.””
