Chapter 11: The Secret Emily Protected

Marcus thought he had won.

That was the thing about people like him.

They always believed the moment they revealed a secret, they controlled it.

They didn’t understand something important.

Secrets lose their power when someone stops being afraid of them.

I held Lily close.

“She isn’t a bargaining chip.””

Marcus smiled.

“She never was to you.””

“Then why are you here?””

“Because Emily took something from me.””

He stepped closer.

“A file.””

“What file?””

“The file that proves I built my company using illegal methods.””

Daniel quietly moved behind me.

I noticed.

Marcus noticed too.

“Don’t.””

His voice became sharper.

“Everyone thinks I’m the monster.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“But nobody asks why she helped me.””

Vanessa flinched.

I turned.

“What?””

Marcus laughed.

“There’s your surprise.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Ethan, don’t listen to him.””

Marcus continued.

“She wasn’t forced at first.””

The silence was unbearable.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa looked away.

I felt something sink inside me.

“Tell me what?””

She whispered:

“I knew Marcus before.””

“How?””

“He hired me.””

“To spy on Emily?””

She nodded.

My stomach turned.

“Why?””

“Because I was desperate.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at Lily.

“I needed money.””

I stared at her.

“So everything he said is true?””

“No.””

She shook her head quickly.

“No. Not everything.””

Marcus smiled.

“She always leaves out the ugly parts.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You threatened my family.””

“You let me in.””

“And I tried to fix it.””

“You failed.””

I stepped forward.

“Both of you are done.””

Marcus laughed.

“You think this ends because you’re angry?””

He pointed at Lily.

“You have no idea what she represents.””

I looked at my daughter.

“She represents my daughter.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“That’s why you’ll lose.””

Then something unexpected happened.

Lily stepped forward.

Not much.

Just one small step.

But enough.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus frowned.

“What did you say?””

Lily wiped her eyes.

“You’re wrong.””

I immediately reached for her.

But she continued.

“You keep talking like I’m a thing.””

Marcus stared.

“I’m not.””

The warehouse became silent.

“I’m a person.””

Her voice shook.

“But I know who my daddy is.””

My heart broke.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

Because he expected fear.

Not courage.

Lily looked at him.

“My daddy chose me.””

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus laughed.

But it sounded forced.

“You sound just like your mother.””

Lily looked at him.

“Good.””

That single word made him angry.

He stepped forward.

And I moved instantly.

“You stop.””

Marcus froze.

Because my voice wasn’t the voice of a frightened man.

It was the voice of a father.

Daniel quietly spoke behind me.

“Ethan.””

I looked.

He held up his phone.

Recording.

Marcus saw it.

His expression changed.

“You wouldn’t.””

Daniel smiled.

“You already said enough.””

For the first time, Marcus looked worried.

But then he smiled.

“You still don’t have the file.””

I looked at him.

“Yes, I do.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus’s smile disappeared.

I reached into my pocket.

And pulled out a small memory card.

The one Emily had hidden inside the envelope.

The one I had found taped behind the letter.

Marcus stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He stepped backward.

“You don’t understand what you have.””

I looked at Lily.

“I understand exactly.””

Marcus’s face twisted.

“That file destroys everything.””

“No.””

I walked closer.

“It exposes everything.””

His anger exploded.

“You think you’re better than me?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at my daughter.

“I think she deserves better than all of us.””

Then police sirens sounded outside.

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked shocked.

Daniel smiled.

“You weren’t the only one making plans.””

Marcus stared at me.

“You called them?””

“No.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She did.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

May you like

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.
