Chapter 5: The Truth Emily Left Behind

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I couldn’t.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily standing in that ballroom.

Covered in cake.

Apologizing for someone else’s cruelty.

At three in the morning, I sat at the kitchen table with Emily’s letter in front of me.

The envelope had aged.

The paper had yellowed.

But my name was still written in her handwriting.

The handwriting I had seen on grocery lists.

Birthday cards.

Notes she left beside my coffee every morning.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was one folded piece of paper.

Only one.

And the first line nearly broke me.

“My dearest Ethan, if you are reading this, then something has happened that I hoped would never happen.””

I swallowed hard.

The letter continued.

“I need you to understand something before anything else. I trusted you completely. You were the best father Lily could have ever had.””

My eyes blurred.

I kept reading.

“But I was afraid of what would happen if I wasn’t there to protect her.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Lily was sleeping.

Safe.

For now.

Emily’s words continued.

“When I became sick, Vanessa started visiting more often. At first, I thought she was being kind. She brought food.

She helped with Lily. She told me she wanted to support our family.””

I gripped the paper.

“She wasn’t supporting us.””

A chill ran through me.

“She was studying us.””

I stopped.

Studying us.

Emily had noticed.

All those months I thought Vanessa was becoming part of our family.

Emily saw something darker.

“She asked questions no normal person would ask. She wanted to know about our savings. Our property.

Lily’s trust account. She wanted to know who would make decisions if I passed away.””

My jaw tightened.

Then came the sentence that made me stand.

“She once asked me what would happen if Lily was raised by someone who wasn’t emotionally attached to her.””

I stared at the letter.

No.

No, that couldn’t be right.

Emily continued.

“I confronted her. She smiled and told me I was being paranoid because I was sick.””

My breathing became heavier.

“She made me feel like I was imagining things.””

That sentence hurt.

Because Emily had always been strong.

For her to write that meant she had truly been scared.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

“Ethan, I don’t know what Vanessa wants. I don’t know how far she would go. But I know one thing.””

I read the next line slowly.

“Never let Vanessa have control over Lily.””

I put the letter down.

My hands covered my face.

Emily knew.

She knew before I did.

And I almost handed Vanessa everything she wanted.

The next morning, I drove Lily to my sister’s house.

I didn’t want her anywhere near the chaos.

My sister Rachel opened the door and immediately hugged her.

“What happened?””

I looked at Lily.

Then at Rachel.

“I’ll explain later.””

Rachel noticed the frosting stain still on Lily’s dress.

Her expression changed.

“What did someone do?””

I didn’t answer.

Because if I spoke, I knew my anger would come out.

Instead, I kissed Lily’s forehead.

“I’ll be back soon.””

She grabbed my hand.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you still my family?””

The question destroyed me.

I knelt down.

“Forever.””

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

“Even if Vanessa says I’m not?””

My heart broke.

“Especially then.””

After leaving, I drove straight to Vanessa’s apartment.

I needed answers.

She opened the door wearing yesterday’s wedding makeup.

She looked exhausted.

But not sorry.

That told me everything.

“Ethan.””

Her voice was softer.

“I knew you’d come back.””

I stared at her.

“Did you know Emily?””

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“What?””

“Don’t pretend.””

She stepped backward.

“Where did you get that idea?””

I held up Emily’s letter.

Her face went pale.

“You found it.””

“Yes.””

Silence.

Then she laughed.

Not nervously.

Not sadly.

Coldly.

“You really read it?””

I stared at her.

“What did you do to Emily?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“You manipulated her.””

“She was dying.””

The way she said it made my blood run cold.

Like Emily’s fear was an inconvenience.

“You were supposed to help us.””

“I did help.””

“You tried to take my daughter.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“You always choose her.””

I stepped closer.

“She’s my child.””

“And I was supposed to become your wife.””

“You knew she came first.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Then explain.””

She was silent.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.

Instead, she smiled.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

She walked toward the kitchen counter.

“You think Emily was protecting Lily from me.””

She picked up a glass of water.

“She wasn’t.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“Emily was hiding something from you.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What?””

Vanessa took a sip.

“Something about Lily’s birth.””

I froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

“You’re lying.””

“Maybe.””

She smiled.

“But ask yourself something, Ethan.””

She placed the glass down.

“Why did Emily leave you a warning about me…”

A pause.

“Instead of telling you the truth about your own daughter?””

My mind went blank.

I hated that a part of me listened.

I hated that doubt appeared.

Because Emily was gone.

And Vanessa knew exactly where to attack.

I turned to leave.

But before I reached the door, Vanessa spoke again.

“There’s a reason Emily never wanted you to see Lily’s original birth records.””

I stopped.

“What reason?””

May you like

Vanessa smiled.

“The reason your entire life is built on a lie.””
