Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Veil
My best friend Daniel had been beside me through the worst years of my life.
He was there when my wife died.
He was there when Lily took her first steps.
He was there when I sat alone in my house, wondering if I was capable of raising a child by myself.
So when he spoke, everyone listened.
Vanessa looked at him with pure fear.
“Daniel, don’t.””
That one sentence told me everything.
I tightened my grip around Lily’s hand.
“What were you going to tell me?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then at my daughter.
“I should have told you weeks ago.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?”” Daniel asked quietly.
“Tell him the truth?””
Her face became cold.
“You’re jealous.””
A few guests murmured.
Daniel laughed sadly.
“Jealous? Vanessa, I helped Ethan plan this wedding. I wanted him to be happy.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
“I just never thought I’d have to prove what kind of person you really are.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Put that away.””
Daniel pressed the screen.
A recording started playing.
Her own voice filled the ballroom.
“I don’t care how attached he is to her.””
Everyone froze.
It was Vanessa.
A conversation from weeks earlier.
“I’ll handle Lily after the wedding,” Vanessa’s recorded voice continued.
“Ethan is emotional because he feels guilty about losing his wife. Once we’re married, he’ll understand that a child needs discipline.””
My daughter looked up at me.
I felt my heart break.
Daniel stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That’s not what it sounds like.””
I stared at her.
“What does it sound like?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
“You said you would ‘handle’ my daughter.””
“I meant parenting!””
“You called her a burden.””
“I was frustrated!””
“You said she was in the way.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
For the first time, she stopped pretending.
“She is always in the way.””
The words landed harder than the cake.
Lily heard them.
I saw it.
Her tiny shoulders dropped.
Like she was trying to become smaller.
Invisible.
I knelt beside her.
“Don’t listen to that.””
But she whispered:
“I knew it.””
My heart shattered.
“What?””
She looked at Vanessa.
“I knew she didn’t like me.””
Vanessa looked annoyed instead of sorry.
And that made everything clear.
A person who loved a child would have broken down.
They would have apologized.
They would have been horrified.
Vanessa wasn’t.
She was angry she had been exposed.
Then she pointed at Lily.
“You always choose her.””
The ballroom went silent.
I slowly stood.
“Yes.””
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
“I choose her.””
She stared at me.
“You’re throwing away everything for a child who isn’t even yours by blood?””
The moment she said it, several guests gasped.
Lily looked confused.
I felt something inside me go completely still.
Because that was the one line she could never take back.
I walked closer.
“She is my daughter.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You know what I mean.””
“Yes,” I said.
“I know exactly what you mean.””
I pulled another paper from my jacket.
This time, Vanessa didn’t recognize it.
Her confidence returned slightly.
“What is that?””
I handed it to her.
“Something you should have known before you hurt her.””
She looked down.
Read the first line.
Then the second.
Her face went pale.
“No…”
I watched her fingers tremble.
“What did you do?”” she whispered.
I looked at Lily.
Then back at Vanessa.
“You thought Lily was the only person you could push around.””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. Ethan found out two days ago.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“What is this?””
My voice remained calm.
“It’s proof that your private messages, your conversations, and your plans were not just about being a strict stepmother.””
She swallowed.
“You went through my phone?””
“No.””
I held up the document.
“You left enough evidence behind yourself.””
A heavy silence filled the room.
Vanessa looked around.
The guests who had been smiling earlier were now staring at her.
The dream wedding she cared about more than anything was collapsing around her.
But I wasn’t thinking about the wedding anymore.
I was thinking about Lily.
Her ruined dress.
Her broken little voice.
Her asking if she was worth choosing.
I picked up her flower basket from the floor and handed it back to her.
“Come on, sweetheart.””
She looked at me.
“Are we leaving?””
I smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
She looked relieved.
As we walked toward the ballroom doors, Vanessa shouted behind us.
“Ethan!””
I stopped.
Not because I wanted to hear her.
Because Lily squeezed my hand.
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“You can’t just walk away.””
I turned slightly.
And she said the one thing that made me realize this was far from over.
“I know something about Lily that you don’t.””
I looked back at her.
“What?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
A cold, desperate smile.
“Ask yourself why her mother never told you the truth before she died.””
My blood ran cold.
May you like
Because for the first time that day…
Vanessa looked like she wasn’t lying.
