Chapter 3 - THE BANK AND THE SECRET

I spent the night at Adrian’s mother’s house with Lily. The little girl fell asleep clinging to my hand, exhausted and frightened. Adrian sat in the living room long after she was asleep, staring at the silver key and the scrap of paper, turning them over and over in his hands.
He didn’t speak much that night. He barely slept. I found him at dawn sitting on the porch watching the sun come up, the key still clutched in his palm.
At nine o’clock we walked into the downtown bank together. The manager recognized Adrian immediately and escorted us to the vault personally. He verified the key, checked the signature cards, and then led us down a long, marble corridor to a row of metal doors.
Box 317 sat near the back.
Adrian hesitated when he stood before it. He looked at me, his face pale.
“What if she was wrong?” he asked quietly. “What if this destroys everything?”
“Rachel wouldn’t leave something just to hurt you,” I said gently. “Whatever is in there… she left it to protect you.”
Adrian nodded slowly. He inserted the key. Turned it. The lock clicked open. He pulled the heavy metal drawer out and carried it to a private conference room.
Inside the box sat three items.
A thick, sealed manila envelope.
A handwritten letter, addressed to Adrian.
And a small, leather-bound journal.
Adrian sat at the table. He reached out and touched the letter first. His hands trembled as he broke the seal. He unfolded the paper carefully. Rachel’s handwriting filled the page.
*My dearest Adrian,*
*If you are reading this, then I am gone. And the worst has happened. She has found her way into our home. Into our lives. Into your heart.*
*Her name is not Vanessa. That is not the name she was born with. I did not imagine her. I did not invent her. She is real. And she has been waiting for me to die so she could take my place.*
Adrian stopped reading. He looked up at me, his eyes wide. “Her name… isn’t Vanessa?”
“Keep reading,” I said.
Adrian nodded and continued.
*I found her photograph. I found the old documents. She changed her name three years ago. She reinvented herself. She waited until I was too sick to fight. And then she came to you, pretending to be someone she is not.*
*She has told you lies about me. She has told you I was jealous. I was paranoid. I was afraid of her. That is not why I wrote this warning. I wrote it because I know who she really is. And I know what she is capable of.*
*Open the envelope. Read the journal. And then… decide for yourself whether you can trust the woman sleeping in my bed.*
*Forgive me for not telling you sooner. I was afraid she would hurt Lily if I did. So I waited. And I hoped I was wrong. But I was never wrong about her.*
*With all my love,*
*Rachel*
Adrian set the letter down gently. He reached for the manila envelope and broke the seal. He pulled out the contents and spread them across the table.
My breath caught in my throat.
Old newspaper clippings. Photographs. Legal documents. Birth certificates.
Adrian picked up the photograph first. It showed two young women standing side by side. One was Rachel. The other… looked almost exactly like Vanessa. But her smile was harder. Her eyes were colder.
Adrian turned the photo over. Written on the back in Rachel’s handwriting: Elena Moretti. Born May 12th. Two years older than she claims. Look at the eyes.
Adrian picked up the birth certificate next. It bore a different name. Different date of birth. Different parents.
“Elena Moretti,” Adrian whispered. “Vanessa… is Elena Moretti.”
He looked at the newspaper clippings next. His hands began to shake.
The first clipping dated fourteen years earlier: LOCAL BUSINESSMAN MISSING. POLICE SUSPECT FOUL PLAY.
The second: WIDOW QUESTIONED IN HUSBAND’S DISAPPEARANCE. NO CHARGES FILED.
The third: ELENA MORETTI INHERITS ENTIRE ESTATE. HUSBAND’S BODY NEVER FOUND.
Adrian sat back in his chair, the papers slipping from his fingers onto the table. He stared at me, his face ashen.
“She was married before,” he said, his voice hollow. “Her husband disappeared. She inherited everything. And the body… was never found.”
He reached for the journal. His fingers trembled as he opened it. Rachel’s handwriting filled every page. She had been investigating Vanessa for months before she died.
*October 12th: She introduced herself to Adrian today. She said she worked in interior design. She said she admired my garden. She knew things about us that no stranger should know.*
*November 3rd: I found her photograph in the old yearbook. She went to college with my cousin. She was calling herself Elena back then. She changed her name after her husband disappeared.*
*November 29th: She came to the house today. She looked at Lily exactly the way she looked at me. With hatred. She knows I recognize her. She knows I know.*
*December 15th: I am sick. The doctors say I don’t have long. I am afraid. If I die… she will come here. She will try to take everything. And she will hurt Lily to get it.*
*January 2nd: I confronted her today. I told her I knew who she was. I told her I would expose her if she came near my family. She smiled at me. She told me to enjoy my remaining days. Because when I was gone… she would have everything.*
Adrian closed the journal. He sat in silence for a very long time. Outside, cars passed on the street. A clock ticked somewhere in the bank. But inside that small conference room, everything felt frozen.
“Vanessa… Elena…” Adrian whispered the name as if it burned him. “She knew Rachel. She threatened her. She waited for her to die… and then she came to me under a false name.”
“She didn’t just marry you by accident,” I said quietly. “She targeted you. She knew exactly who you were. Exactly where to find you.”
Adrian stood up slowly. He put the documents back into the envelope. His face was hard, his eyes dark with a terrible, quiet rage.
“She came for the money,” he said. “She came for everything Rachel left behind. Everything I have.”
“And when Lily wouldn’t tell her where the key was…” I said. “She locked her in that chest to buy time. To scare her into talking.”
Adrian nodded. He tucked the envelope under his arm and stood up.
“She’s been living in my house,” he said, his voice shaking. “Sleeping in my bed. Eating at my table. Holding my daughter… while pretending to be someone she isn’t. While planning to take everything.”
He walked toward the door. I stood up and followed him.
“Adrian,” I said. “What will you do?”
May you like
He stopped at the doorway. He looked at me, and I saw tears glistening in his eyes.
“I’m going home,” he said. “And I’m going to find out what really happened to Elena Moretti’s husband. And then… I’m going to make sure she never hurts anyone ever again.”
