Chapter 17 - THE BEGINNING OF THE END

Months passed. Seasons changed. The house slowly began to feel like a home again. But nothing was ever quite the same.

Adrian kept the metal box locked away. He never showed Lily the contents. He never spoke of Marcus or Elena unless necessary. He focused instead on healing. On being a father. On rebuilding what had been broken.

But I noticed the changes in him. The way he paused before entering rooms. The way he watched strangers too carefully. The way he kept Rachel’s final letter on his nightstand, reading it again and again, as if searching for one last secret he had missed.

One evening, he came to me. He held a single sheet of paper in his hand.

“I found this,” he said. “Tucked inside the back of the legal documents. Rachel’s handwriting. Dated the day before she died.”

He handed it to me.

*Adrian,* it read. When you find the truth… do not let bitterness take root. Do not let Elena’s crimes turn you against love. She was broken. She was used. But she was also my sister. And I loved her. Forgive her when you can. And protect Lily. Above all else… protect our daughter.

Adrian stood quietly while I read it.

“She knew,” I said softly. “Even then… she knew exactly what would happen.”

“She knew Elena,” Adrian said. “Better than any of us. She knew her weaknesses. Her fears. Her longing to be loved.”

“And she still loved her,” I said.

Adrian nodded slowly. “That is the hardest part to understand. That Rachel could love someone who would destroy her.”

“Because love isn’t conditional,” I said. “Rachel loved Elena despite everything. Because she saw the girl her sister could have been. If only she had been loved properly.”

Adrian looked out the window. The sun was setting, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple.

“I don’t know if I can ever forgive Elena,” Adrian said honestly. “Maybe one day. But not yet. Rachel’s death… the danger to Lily… it is too much.”

“Rachel didn’t expect you to forgive immediately,” I said. “She just asked you to try. One day.”

We fell silent. Somewhere in the house, Lily laughed—the bright, clear sound cutting through the quiet. Adrian’s face softened.

“I will protect her,” he said quietly. “That is what Rachel asked. And that is what I will do.”
