Chapter 15 - THE SHOCKING ALLY

Marcus froze. He turned toward the stairs.

Standing there, silhouetted against the dim light from above, was Elena.

She stood unsteadily, holding a small device in her hand—a police panic button.

“Elena?” Marcus whispered, stunned. “How…?”

“The police brought me,” Elena said, her voice trembling but clear. “They followed you here. They watched you leave your safe house. They waited.”

Marcus’s face hardened. He shifted his aim toward her. “You betrayed me. After everything I did for you.”

“Everything you did for me?” Elena cried. “You destroyed me! You made me hate my own sister! You made me kill her! And then you left me to rot!”

“I protected you!” Marcus shouted. “I kept you safe! I gave you everything!”

“You gave me lies!” Elena said. “You gave me poison! You gave me a life of fear! And Rachel… Rachel was the only one who ever tried to help me!”

“Rachel was going to ruin us!” Marcus said. “She found everything! She was going to expose me! Send me to prison! And you would have gone down with me!”

“Because I was guilty!” Elena said. “Because I listened to you! Because I let you turn me against the only person who ever loved me!”

Marcus hesitated. He looked from Elena to Adrian, then back to Elena. The gun wavered in his hand.

“Elena,” he said, his voice softening. “Come with me. We can still disappear. Together. Just like before.”

Elena shook her head. Tears streamed down her face.

“There is no together anymore, Marcus,” she said. “You used me. You lied to me. You made me think I was protecting us… when all I was doing was destroying myself.”

She pressed the button in her hand. Sirens wailed outside, growing closer. Blue light began to flash through the cracks in the walls.

Marcus looked around wildly. He realized he was trapped.

“You would turn me over to the police?” he said, as if he couldn’t believe it. “Your own husband?”

“You’re not my husband,” Elena said. “You’re a stranger. A criminal. And you killed the only good thing I ever had.”

Marcus’s face twisted. He raised the gun.

“Then I’ll take all of us with me!”

Before he could fire—Adrian lunged. He struck Marcus’s arm upward. The gun went off with a deafening roar, the bullet burying itself in the ceiling. The two men crashed against the wall, struggling.

Elena screamed.

I rushed forward to help. Adrian drove his fist into Marcus’s stomach. Marcus doubled over, losing his grip on the gun. It skittered across the floor.

Marcus scrambled backward, gasping. He looked at us—Adrian, me, Elena standing together at the stairs. He realized it was over.

He looked at Elena one last time. His face was filled with a terrible sadness.

“I loved you, Elena,” he said quietly. “In my own way. I truly did.”

Then he turned and ran. Up the stairs. Into the darkness.

Adrian started after him.

“Adrian!” Elena cried out. “Let him go. The police are waiting.”

Adrian stopped at the top of the stairs. Outside, officers were swarming the building. Shouts rang out. Marcus wouldn’t get far. He couldn’t.

Adrian walked back down. He picked up the metal box from the floor. It was still intact.

Elena stood trembling at the bottom of the stairs. She looked at the box, then at Adrian.

“I did it,” she whispered. “I finally told the truth.”

Adrian nodded slowly. He looked at her—really looked at her—with no anger, no hatred, only a terrible sadness.

“Rachel would have been proud of you,” he said quietly.

Elena broke down completely. She sank onto the step, covering her face, weeping as the police poured into the basement.
