Chapter 16 - THE CONFESSION

Marcus was captured less than ten minutes later. He didn’t fight. He didn’t run. He simply stood still as they cuffed him, his face blank, his eyes empty.
He made no attempt to deny anything. The evidence in the box was overwhelming. But he still surprised everyone—including his lawyers—by agreeing to confess to everything.
The interrogation lasted all night. Elena sat in the room next door, listening, as Marcus told them everything.
How he had found Elena. Married her. And then realized Rachel was investigating him. How he had manipulated Elena into believing Rachel was her enemy. How he had obtained the poison, given it to her, and told her it was merely to make Rachel too sick to speak. How he had watched from the shadows while Elena destroyed herself to protect him.
And the most terrible revelation of all: he had known the poison would kill Rachel. He had known from the very beginning. He had used Elena to commit murder, knowing she would take the blame.
Elena listened in silence. She didn’t cry. She didn’t speak. She simply sat there, pale and still, absorbing every word.
When Marcus finished confessing, the detective turned to Elena.
“Did you know?” he asked gently. “Did you know the poison would kill her?”
Elena looked at the floor. She was silent for a long time.
“I thought it would make her sleep,” she whispered. “I thought it would make her too sick to talk. Marcus told me… it would only buy us time. I never meant to kill her. I loved her. Even when I hated her… I loved her.”
She looked up at Adrian, who stood watching from the doorway.
“I would never have hurt her,” Elena said. “Not really. Not if I had known the truth.”
Adrian nodded slowly. “I believe you.”
The legal process stretched on for months. Marcus was charged with Rachel’s murder, fraud, identity theft, and a long list of other crimes. He would spend the rest of his life in prison.
Elena faced a more complicated fate. She had been manipulated. She had been lied to. But she had also administered the poison. She had locked her own niece in a chest. She had lied and stolen and deceived.
Her lawyer argued that she had been under Marcus’s influence. That she had been manipulated to the point of diminished responsibility. That she had never truly understood what she was doing.
And in the end—partly because of Rachel’s own letters, partly because of Elena’s testimony, partly because of everything she had risked to expose Marcus—the court showed mercy.
She was sentenced to a reduced term. With possibility of parole.
But before she was taken away, she asked to speak to Adrian. Alone.
They met in the visiting room. Elena sat across the glass partition, wearing prison clothing, her hair pulled back simply.
“I have one more thing to tell you,” she said quietly. “Something I’ve kept hidden.”
Adrian leaned closer. “What is it?”
Elena took a breath.
“Rachel didn’t change her will,” she said. “Not the way you think. She left me nothing. She was going to leave me everything… but then she found out who Marcus was. And she changed it back. To protect you. To protect Lily.”
Adrian went still. “Then why did you do it? Why did you risk everything to help us expose him?”
Elena looked down at her hands.
“Because she was still going to help me,” Elena whispered. “She wrote me a letter. The one she never sent. She said… even though I had betrayed her… she was still going to pay for my defense. She was still going to stand by me. Because I was her sister.”
Tears spilled over Elena’s face.
“I destroyed the only person who ever truly loved me,” she said. “And I will carry that guilt for the rest of my life.”
Adrian put his hand against the glass.
“Rachel forgave you,” he said gently. “I know she did.”
Elena looked up. Her eyes were red and swollen.
“Then tell me something,” she said. “When all of this is over… when I have paid for what I did… will you let me see Lily? Just once? So I can tell her… I am sorry.”
Adrian hesitated. It was a hard question. A terrible request. But looking at Elena—broken, humbled, finally honest—he remembered Rachel’s words. How can I hate what is part of me?
“We will see,” Adrian said quietly. “Maybe one day. But not yet. Not for a long time.”

Elena nodded. She looked at him one last time.
“Thank you,” she whispered. “For not hating me.”
