Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

Marcus Vane.
The name meant nothing to me at first. But Adrian went pale the moment Elena said it.
“Marcus Vane,” Adrian whispered. “The businessman who vanished fifteen years ago. Accused of stealing millions from his own company. Who disappeared before he could be arrested.”
“He’s my husband,” Elena said quietly. “He didn’t die. He didn’t disappear. He just… became someone else. Julian. And then he came back. Because he knew Rachel had found out who he was. And what he had done.”
“Rachel knew,” I said. “That’s what she meant in her journal. That’s the secret she was afraid to write down.”
Elena nodded. “She found his real name. His photograph. Everything. She told me… she told me I had to leave him. That he was dangerous. That he would destroy us all.”
“But you didn’t believe her,” Adrian said gently.
“I wanted to believe him!” Elena cried. “He was all I had! He told me Rachel was lying! That she was jealous! That she wanted him gone so she could keep everything for herself!”
She paused, trembling.
“Marcus told me… if Rachel lived, she would expose him. And if she exposed him… she would expose me too. Because I was his wife. Because I knew who he was. Because I didn’t tell anyone.”
“So he convinced you that killing Rachel was the only way to protect both of you,” I said.
Elena nodded, weeping openly now. “And then… when Rachel was dead… he left me. Said it wasn’t safe. Said he’d come back for me when things settled. But he never did. He just… watched. From a distance. And let me take all the blame.”
Adrian stood up slowly. “The documents at the old mill. They prove everything?”
“Everything,” Elena said. “His real identity. The money he stole. The plans. The names of people he’s working with. Rachel found them all. And she hid them there. Before she died.”
Adrian looked at me. “We have to go. Now.”
“Be careful,” Elena called out as we turned to leave. “He’s not working alone. There are others. People he’s paid. People who will do anything to protect him.”
“We will be careful,” Adrian said. He paused at the door. “Elena… thank you. For telling us.”

Elena looked at him through the glass. Her face was pale and broken.
“Find him,” she whispered. “And make him pay for everything he did. To Rachel. To me. To all of us.”
