Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

We drove to the jail in silence. The message burned in my mind. Tell Elena to keep silent.
When we arrived, Elena sat behind glass, pale and exhausted. She looked surprised to see us.
“Elena,” Adrian said, leaning close to the microphone. “We know about Julian.”
Elena went rigid. Her eyes widened in pure terror.
“Julian is your husband,” Adrian said. “The one who disappeared. He changed his name. He came back. And he manipulated you. Every step of the way.”
Elena said nothing. She looked down at her hands.
“He poisoned Rachel,” Adrian said. “He gave you the herbs. He told you what to do. And when Rachel died… he let you take all the blame.”
Elena looked up slowly. Tears glistened in her eyes.
“He told me Rachel was going to have me arrested,” Elena whispered. “That she’d say I killed him too. That I’d spend the rest of my life in prison. He said the only way to be safe… was to make sure Rachel died first.”
“And you believed him?” Adrian asked gently.
“I had nobody else!” Elena cried. “Everyone else turned against me! Only Julian understood! Only Julian helped me!”
“He used you,” Adrian said. “He used your fear. Your loneliness. Your love. And then he stood back and watched while you destroyed yourself to protect him.”
Elena buried her face in her hands. “He said he loved me. That we’d run away together. Be free. But then… then he disappeared. Left me alone. With everything.”
“He’s still watching you,” Adrian said. “He sent us a message. He’s threatening you. If you tell the truth… he’ll make sure you’re blamed for everything.”
Elena looked up, terrified. “He can do it. He knows things. Things about my past. Things about… about what really happened.”
“Elena,” Adrian said firmly. “Listen to me. He is not your friend. He never was. He killed Rachel. He set you up. And now he’s trying to silence you so he can walk free.”
“What can I do?” Elena whispered. “If I speak… he’ll destroy me.”
“If you stay silent,” Adrian said, “he wins. He walks free. And someday… he will find another woman to manipulate. Another family to destroy. Rachel’s death will have been for nothing.”
Elena trembled. She looked at Adrian, then at the floor.
“I don’t know if I can,” she said brokenly. “I’m so afraid of him.”
“Then tell us what you know,” Adrian said. “Let us take the risk. Let us protect you.”
Elena fell silent. She sat there for a long time, staring at her hands. When she finally spoke, her voice was barely a whisper.
“There’s a safe house,” she said. “A place only he knows. Documents are hidden there. Proof of everything. His real name. His crimes. Everything Rachel discovered.”
“Where?” Adrian asked.
Elena hesitated. She looked at the door, as if expecting Julian to walk through at any moment.
“At the old mill,” she said. “In the basement. Behind the brick wall. There’s a metal box.”
She looked up at Adrian, tears spilling over.
“If I tell you this… he will kill me.”
Adrian leaned closer. “He will never touch you. I promise.”

Elena took a deep, shaky breath. And then she said the name. The name that changed everything.
“His real name is Marcus Vane. And he didn’t just kill Rachel. He has been planning this… for twenty years.”
