Chapter 11 - THE UNSEEN HAND

The revelation hung in the air like smoke. Elena had been the weapon—but someone else had held the handle.

Adrian began to go back through everything. Every conversation. Every introduction. Every person who had been present when Elena first appeared.

“She told me she was introduced to you by a mutual acquaintance,” I said. “A friend of a friend.”

Adrian nodded. “Julian. He worked in real estate. He said he’d known Elena for years. Recommended her as an interior designer. Said she was trustworthy.”

“Julian…” I frowned. “I never met him. Did you ever see him again after Elena moved in?”

Adrian hesitated. “Once. Briefly. He came by the house a few months later. Had a meeting with Elena. I walked in on them. They stopped talking immediately. Looked guilty. Elena said he was just helping her with some paperwork.”

“Did you ever see him and Rachel together?” I asked.

Adrian went still. “Yes. Once. In the hallway. Rachel looked at him with absolute terror. She turned and walked the other way. I asked her about it later. She said… she said he reminded her of someone from her past. Someone she had hoped never to see again.”

“Rachel knew him,” I said. “Before Elena ever appeared.”

Adrian stood up abruptly. “I need to find him. I need to know who he really is.”

He began making calls. Checking records. Running every trace he could find. Hours passed. Late into the night, he sat at his computer, his face illuminated by the screen.

Then he stopped.

“Clara,” he said, his voice barely audible. “Look at this.”

I leaned over his shoulder. He had pulled up two photographs. Side by side.

One was Julian. The man who had introduced Elena to Adrian.

The other was Elena’s husband. The man who had disappeared years before.

They were the same man.

Different hair. Different glasses. Slight changes to his appearance. But the bone structure. The eyes. The scar above the left eyebrow. Exactly the same.

“Elena’s husband never disappeared,” Adrian said. “He changed his name. Altered his appearance. And came back into her life as someone else. As a friend. An advisor. A confidant.”

“He came back to find out what she knew,” I said. “And to manipulate her into doing exactly what he wanted.”

Adrian nodded slowly. “He knew Rachel had discovered the truth. He knew she was dangerous. So he pushed Elena. Fed her lies. Told Rachel was going to disinherit her. Expose her. Destroy her. Every fear Elena had… he planted it.”

“And Elena believed him,” I said. “Because she trusted him. Because she thought he was her only friend.”

“Which means,” Adrian said, his voice turning cold, “that Julian—the man Elena married—is the one who truly killed Rachel. He gave Elena the poison. He told her what to do. He stood back and watched while she destroyed herself to protect him.”

“And now?” I asked. “Where is he?”

Adrian looked at the screen. Then at me.

“He’s been watching us this entire time,” Adrian said. “And when Elena was arrested… he lost control of her. Which means he has every reason to make sure she never speaks to anyone again.”

My phone buzzed on the table.

A text message. From an unknown number.

*Tell Elena to keep silent. Or the truth about her husband will come out. And she will hang for a murder she didn’t commit alone.*

Adrian read the message over my shoulder. His jaw tightened.

“He’s threatening her,” Adrian said. “Silence her. Protect himself. Even now.”

“We need to warn Elena,” I said. “Immediately.”
