Chapter 19 - HEALING

Adrian visited Elena in prison one last time before she was transferred to a facility far away. He showed her the documents quietly. He told her the truth gently.
Elena didn’t scream. She didn’t weep. She simply sat there, as if her soul had already left her body.
“That is why Rachel never told me,” Elena whispered. “She couldn’t. She couldn’t break me that way.”
“She loved you,” Adrian said. “Even then.”
Elena looked at him, her eyes hollow.
“And Marcus… he knew the whole time?”
“He knew,” Adrian said.
Elena fell silent. She sat there for a very long time, staring at nothing.
“Then Rachel was right,” Elena said finally. “The truth destroys everything.”
She looked at Adrian.
“Promise me one thing,” she said. “Never tell Lily. Let her grow up believing her aunt was… someone else. Someone better. Let her never know what kind of blood runs in her veins.”
Adrian hesitated. Then he nodded.
“I promise,” he said.
Elena leaned back. She looked smaller than ever.
“Then I can bear it,” she whispered. “If Lily never knows… then Rachel’s secret died with me. And that is enough.”
Adrian stood up to leave. At the door, he paused.
“Elena,” he said. “Rachel would have forgiven you. Completely.”
Elena closed her eyes. A single tear slipped down her cheek.

“Tell her I am sorry,” Elena whispered. “Tell her I am so, so sorry.”
Adrian walked out without looking back.
