Chapter 4 - THE LAWYER

We left before dawn the next morning. Caleb held my hand as we walked to the car, looking up at me with those trusting eyes.
"Where are we going, Daddy?"
"To see a friend," I told him. "Someone who can help us."
"Is Vanessa coming?"
"No," I said firmly. "Vanessa is not coming. She is never coming near you again."
Caleb nodded, but I could see the doubt lingering in his gaze. Vanessa had spent months weaving lies into his life. It would take time to undo the damage.
We drove to the city. To a quiet, brick building tucked away on a side street. Inside, we found the office of Arthur Sterling. Emily’s godfather. A man who had known her since she was a baby.
Arthur was in his late sixties, with silver hair and sharp, intelligent eyes. He stood up when we entered, looking from me to Clara, then down at Caleb.
He closed the door and locked it.
"Clara told me the basics on the phone," he said, gesturing for us to sit. "But I need to hear everything. From the beginning."
I told him. Everything. The doghouse. The letter. The phone call from Marcus. Vanessa’s betrayal.
Arthur listened in silence, his face growing grimmer with every word. When I finished, he leaned back in his chair and steepled his fingers.
"I knew Emily was hiding something," he said quietly. "She came to me shortly before she died. She was terrified. She told me she’d made a mistake years ago, and that the mistake was coming back to haunt her. But she wouldn’t give me details. She said it was safer if I didn’t know."
He looked at the letter I had placed on his desk.
"Marcus Vance," Arthur said the name like a curse. "He is exactly as Emily described. Dangerous. Ruthless. He made his fortune through blackmail and threats. He has spent years trying to find Emily, convinced that Caleb is his heir. He believes he has a right to everything—your money, your home, your life."
"But he has no proof," I said.
Arthur shook his head. "Legally, if he establishes paternity, he can petition for custody. And he will spare no expense to get what he wants. He has powerful friends, Adrian. Judges, politicians, police. He can make this a nightmare for you."
"He can’t have him," I said, my voice low and fierce. "I won’t let him."
Arthur looked at me, long and hard. Then he reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a thick file.
"Emily came to me," he said. "Before she died. She left this. She told me to open it only if something happened to her. And only if Caleb was in danger."
He slid the file across the desk.
I opened it. Inside were legal documents. Adoption papers. Signed by Emily. Dated months before her death.
"She knew," Arthur said softly. "She knew she might not survive. She wanted to make sure you had every legal right to be his father. She wanted to protect you both."
My hands trembled as I read the final page. Emily had filed a formal request for me to adopt Caleb. It had been completed, but never submitted. She had been waiting for the right time. And then she died.
"Why didn’t she tell me?" I whispered.
"Because she was afraid," Arthur said. "She was afraid if you knew the truth, you would leave her. She loved you too much to risk losing you. So she hid it. And she planned to tell you when the adoption was finalized. When there was nothing anyone could do about it."
He tapped the paper.
"We can submit these now. Retroactive approval. If the court accepts them, you are Caleb’s legal father. Marcus has no claim. None."
"Will it work?" I asked.
Arthur’s expression darkened.
"It should. But Marcus will fight it. He will challenge the documents. He will claim they are forgeries. He will try to destroy you, Adrian. He will use every secret, every lie, every weapon he has. Including Vanessa."
I thought of my wife. The woman I had trusted. The woman who had stood beside me at the altar while planning to hand my son over to a monster.
"Let him try," I said quietly. "I have nothing left to lose. And I have everything to fight for."
Arthur nodded solemnly.
"Then there is one more thing. Emily left a recording. She said if Marcus ever came for Caleb, I should play it. She said it would destroy him."
He pressed a button on his desk. A voice filled the room. Emily’s voice. Clear and strong.
*"If you are listening to this, then Marcus has found us. Or I am gone. Listen carefully. Marcus, you are listening too. I know you are. You think you can take my son. You think you can use him to get what you want. But you are wrong."*
*"I know what you did. I know about the money. I know about the threats. I know about the night you were drunk and drove your car into that family. I know you killed them. And I have proof. Every document. Every witness statement. Every photograph."*
*"Touch my son. And I release everything. You will go to prison. For the rest of your life. Caleb belongs with Adrian. He is the only father Caleb has ever known. Stay away from my family. Or burn with us."*
Silence filled the room when the recording ended.
Arthur looked at me.
"She was holding his entire life in her hands," he said quietly. "She had enough evidence to destroy him completely. She kept it all these years as insurance. To keep him away."
"And now?" I asked.
"And now," Arthur said, "the war has truly begun. Adrian, you hold the only leverage Marcus cares about. His freedom. He will do anything to get that evidence back. Anything."
May you like
I stood up and took the file.
"Let him come," I said. "Emily protected him all these years. Now it’s my turn."
