Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH IN THE BOX

I sat in the shelter of the trees for a long time, catching my breath. My heart hammered against my ribs. Arthur was a traitor. Marcus knew where Caleb was. Vanessa… I didn’t know what had happened to her.
I looked down at the box. Emily’s box. Sealed with her wax. Protected by her key.
I broke the seal and lifted the lid.
Inside, there were stacks of documents. Photographs. Handwritten notes. And a single, final letter.
I unfolded it.
*Adrian,*
*If you are reading this, then everything has gone wrong. Marcus has found us. Arthur has betrayed us. I always suspected him. I left the letter with Arthur knowing he would tell Marcus. I wanted to see if he would show his true face. I wanted to lead Marcus into the open.*
*And I wanted to see who would stand with you.*
*Vanessa was my sister, Adrian. My own sister. She was jealous. She was weak. But she was not evil. Marcus found her before we were married. He threatened her. He forced her to marry you. To spy on us. To find what I hid.*
*I knew. I knew everything. And I said nothing. Because I hoped Vanessa would change. Because I hoped she would choose family over fear. I left the box where only she could help find it. I wanted to give her a choice. To stand with us. Or to fall with Marcus.*
*If she gave you this box… tell her I forgive her. Tell her I loved her, even when she could not love me back.*
*Everything you need to destroy Marcus is in here. Bank records. Witness statements. Names of his accomplices. Including Arthur. Use it all. Protect Caleb. Be brave. I believe in you.*
*Love,*
*Emily*
I stared at the words. Vanessa was Emily’s sister. My wife… had been my wife’s sister.
That was why she had resented Emily so much. That was why she had known so many secrets. That was why she had hated Caleb—because he was a living reminder of the sister she had always been compared to.
Emily had known all along. She had known her own sister was sent to destroy her family. And she had still loved her enough to leave her a way out.
Vanessa had chosen us. At the very last moment.
I gathered the documents carefully. Every piece of evidence. Every name. Every proof of Marcus’s crimes.

I stood up. The sun was beginning to set. I had to get back to Clara. To Caleb.
And then I had to finish what Emily had started.
