Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH WE CARRY

Months passed. The seasons changed. The wounds began to heal, though the scars remained.
I took Caleb to the bridge one sunny afternoon. We walked to the spot where Emily had died. Where everything had nearly fallen apart. Where Vanessa had stood between us and danger.
I placed flowers on the railing. Caleb stood quietly beside me.
"Is Mommy here?" he asked softly.
I looked out over the water, thinking of her courage, her foresight, her love that had protected us even from the grave.
"She is everywhere good," I told him. "She is in your smile. In your bravery. In the way you forgive people when they make mistakes. She gave us everything we needed to survive. And she gave us each other."
Caleb took my hand.
"She knew you would protect me," he said. "That’s why she left the letter."

"Yes," I said. "She trusted me. And I will never break that trust."
We walked back to the car together. I thought about everything we had learned—that blood does not make a family, that love does. That even the deepest betrayals can be followed by redemption, if a person is brave enough to choose the right path. That secrets hidden in fear can be brought into the light, and that truth, no matter how painful, is always stronger than lies.
