Chapter 16 - THE VERDICT

The trial lasted for months.

The evidence was overwhelming. Emily’s documents. Vanessa’s testimony. Arthur’s confession. Witnesses coming forward, finally brave enough to speak now that Marcus’s power was broken.

Marcus was found guilty of murder, fraud, kidnapping, and dozens of other charges. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Arthur was sentenced to twenty years.

Caleb studied her for a long moment. Then he reached out and touched her bandaged shoulder gently.

"You were sad," he said simply. "But you helped us now. Mommy would be happy."

Vanessa broke down then. She pulled him into a careful hug, crying against his small shoulder, and for the first time, Caleb didn’t pull away. He hugged her back.
