Chapter 19 - HOMECOMING

I decided to go back to our house. The one where everything had happened. Where Caleb had been locked in the doghouse. Where Emily had hidden her secrets. Where Vanessa had finally made her choice.

Clara thought I was crazy. Vanessa thought I was asking for pain.

"That house holds too many bad memories," Vanessa said gently.

"It holds good ones too," I told her. "Emily loved that house. We loved that house. We will not let fear take what belongs to us."

We cleaned it together. Caleb helped me wash the walls. Clara organized the rooms. Vanessa came by to help paint, staying only until sunset, careful never to overstay her welcome.

We turned the room where Emily’s box had been hidden into Caleb’s new playroom. Bright. Warm. Full of light. No shadows. No fear.

And on the mantelpiece, we placed Emily’s photograph. Right where it had always belonged.

One evening, as we sat together for dinner—me, Caleb, Clara, and Vanessa, sitting around the same table where we had once been torn apart by lies—I raised my glass.

"To Emily," I said.

"To Emily," they repeated.

Vanessa looked at her sister’s portrait. Her eyes were soft, full of grief and peace.

"She would have been happy," Vanessa said quietly. "To see us like this. Together."

"She would have been proud of you," I said.

Vanessa looked down at her plate, tears falling silently. Caleb reached over and took her hand. She squeezed it gently.
