Chapter 12 - THE CONFESSION

We carried Vanessa inside and laid her on the sofa. Clara worked quickly to stop the bleeding. The bullet had gone through her shoulder. It was bad, but it wasn’t fatal.

She woke up an hour later. She looked at me, then at the box on the table.

"You read it," she said. It wasn’t a question.

"I did," I said. "Emily knew. All along."

Vanessa closed her eyes. Tears leaked from beneath her lids.

"She knew I was her sister," she whispered. "She knew Marcus sent me. She knew everything. And she still told me… she still told me she loved me. Right before she died."

She opened her eyes and looked at me.

"I hated her. My whole life. She was perfect. Everyone loved her. I was always the shadow. Then Marcus came to me. He said he could make me equal to Emily. He said if I married you and found her secrets… I would have everything she had."

She took a shaky breath.

"I didn’t know what he planned to do to Caleb. I didn’t know he would take him away. I thought… I thought we would just take the money. And leave. But then I saw him. Out in the rain. And I realized… I was becoming exactly what everyone said I was. Cruel. Weak. Jealous."

Vanessa looked at Caleb. He was standing beside the sofa, staring at her with wide, solemn eyes.

"I’m sorry," she whispered to him. "I am so, so sorry."

Caleb hesitated. Then he stepped forward and placed his small hand on top of hers.

"It’s okay," he said quietly. "Mommy forgives you."

Vanessa broke down completely.

I let her cry. I let her feel the weight of everything she had done. And when she was quiet again, I spoke.

"Emily left you a way out," I said. "She wanted you to choose. You chose us. That means something."

"What happens now?" Vanessa asked. "Marcus will kill me for what I did. Arthur too. They won’t stop until they have everything."

"Then we go to the police," I said. "We have enough evidence to put them away for life. All of their crimes. Every name. Every witness. Everything Emily gathered."

Vanessa shook her head. "You don’t understand. Marcus has people on the force. He has judges. He has everyone. If you go to the police… he will know before you even finish speaking."

"Then we do it differently," I said. "We go public. Every document. Every photograph. Every piece of evidence. We release it all to the press. Before he can silence us. Before Arthur can cover his tracks."

Vanessa stared at me. A slow, fearful hope began to grow in her eyes.

"He will lose everything," she whispered. "His reputation. His money. His freedom."

"Yes," I said. "And he will never hurt Caleb again."

Vanessa sat up, wincing with pain. She looked at the box. Then at me.

"Then let’s do it," she said. "I will testify. I will tell them everything. I helped him. I know his crimes. I will give them everything."

She reached out and took my hand.

"Emily saved me," she said quietly. "Even when I didn’t deserve it. Let me help save her son."
