Chapter 13 - THE PAST COMES TO LIGHT

We spent the next two days organizing everything. Vanessa told us names, dates, places. She confirmed every document Emily had left behind. She added details Emily hadn’t known—crimes Marcus had committed after her death, deals he had made, threats he had used to control people.
Clara contacted a trusted journalist she had known for years. Someone with a reputation for fearlessness. Someone who couldn’t be bought.
On the third morning, the story broke.
It went viral within hours. Every news channel. Every website. Every social media platform.
*MARCUS VANCE: EMPIRE BUILT ON FEAR AND FRAUD.*
*INSIDE THE CRIMINAL NETWORK OF A MILLIONAIRE.*
*THE DEATH OF EMILY COLE: NEW EVIDENCE.*
Arthur Sterling was named. His dealings exposed. His debts revealed.
By noon, Arthur had been arrested. He tried to deny everything, but the evidence was overwhelming. Vanessa’s testimony. Emily’s documents. Bank records. Wire transfers. Emails.
Marcus went into hiding. But he couldn’t hide forever. The police were closing in. His associates were turning on him. His empire was crumbling.
That evening, Vanessa sat on the balcony of the safe house, watching the sun set. Her arm was in a sling. She looked tired. But peaceful.
"He will come for me," she said quietly. "Before he runs. He will try to silence me."
"Let him come," I said. "We have protection. He will not touch you."
Vanessa shook her head. "You don’t understand. He has nothing left to lose. When a man like that loses everything… he becomes dangerous."
She turned to me.
"Adrian… I need to tell you something. Something Emily never wrote down. Something she asked me to tell you only if the worst happened."
I waited.
"She didn’t die in an accident," Vanessa said. "Marcus ran her off the road. He was there. He watched her car go over the bridge. And then he drove away."
I felt as though I had been punched in the chest.
"He killed her?" I whispered.
Vanessa nodded, tears streaming down her face.
"She knew he would. She told me. She said if anything ever happened to her… it was him. She wrote the letter and hid the box because she knew he would kill her to get it."
I gripped the balcony railing until my knuckles turned white.
Emily hadn’t died in a tragic accident. She had been murdered.

And she had known she would be. She had prepared for it. She had protected us. She had given her life to keep Caleb safe.
"I will make him pay," I vowed quietly. "I swear it. I will make him pay for everything."
