Chapter 1 - THE ENVELOPE FROM THE PAST

The rain hammered against the roof, loud and relentless. I stood there holding that yellow envelope in my trembling hand, and for a moment, nothing else existed. Not the sirens wailing closer. Not the paramedics calling my name from downstairs. Not Vanessa standing in the doorway, her face drained of all color, her eyes fixed on that envelope as if it held the power to destroy her.

It did. I could feel it.

Vanessa took a step forward, her voice low and desperate. "Adrian, give it to me."

I tucked the envelope securely inside my shirt, against my chest. Then I stepped between her and Caleb.

"Get out," I said. My voice was calm, but underneath, every muscle in my body was coiled tight, ready to snap.

"Listen to me—"

"GET OUT!" I roared. The sound bounced off the walls, sharp and angry.

Vanessa flinched. She looked at Caleb, then back at me, her expression shifting rapidly between fear and fury. She opened her mouth to say something else, but at that moment, Clara rushed up the stairs.

"Adrian! The paramedics are here—what is going on?"

Vanessa turned on her heel and stormed past them, disappearing down the hallway without another word.

I let out a breath I felt I’d been holding for hours. I turned back to Caleb. He stood clutching that little fire truck to his chest, his big eyes wide and staring at me.

"It’s okay, buddy," I said, kneeling down in front of him. "Nothing is going to happen to you. I promise."

Caleb reached out and wrapped his small arms around my neck. I lifted him up, feeling the heat radiating from his skin. He was burning up. The letter would have to wait.

I carried him downstairs to the waiting paramedics. They were gentle and professional, asking questions as they checked his temperature and listened to his chest. I answered automatically, my mind still spinning. They said it was a severe fever brought on by exposure and shock, that he needed to go to the hospital to be monitored.

I nodded. I didn’t care about the cost or the inconvenience. I just wanted him safe.

Clara grabbed my coat and keys. "I’ll drive. You sit in the back with him."

Vanessa was nowhere to be seen as we left. I didn’t look for her.

At the hospital, the nurses fussed over Caleb. They gave him medicine to bring down the fever and put him in a warm bed. He fell asleep almost immediately, his hand still clinging tightly to my finger.

I sat beside him, watching his chest rise and fall. The room was quiet, the lights dim. Then I felt the crinkle of paper against my skin.

The envelope.

My heart began to race all over again. I pulled it out slowly, staring at Emily’s handwriting. Three words. FOR ADRIAN ONLY.

I ran my thumb over the ink. It had been there for years. Waiting. Hidden by my son. Guarded better than any lock could ever guard it.

I broke the seal.

The letter was short. Written in her beautiful, flowing script. Dated exactly two weeks before the accident that took her from us.

*My dearest Adrian,*

*If you are reading this, it means something has happened to me. And it means Caleb has kept his promise to hide this until the time was right. He is a smart, brave boy. Watch over him, always.*

*I need you to know something. Something I was too afraid to tell you while I was alive. Something that might tear our world apart. But I cannot leave without saying it. I cannot leave you and Caleb unprotected.*

*Caleb is not your son.*

The words seemed to blur. I read them again. And again. Caleb is not your son.

My hands began to shake so violently the paper rustled in the silence of the room. I felt as though the floor had dropped out from beneath me. All the love, all the memories, every moment I’d cherished with my boy—was it all a lie?

I forced myself to keep reading, my eyes stinging with tears I refused to let fall.

*I know this breaks your heart. Please, read the rest before you hate me. Please understand why I did what I did.*

*Shortly before we were married, I made a terrible mistake. A moment of weakness. I never told you because I loved you more than I can say. I thought it was gone. Buried in the past. But then Caleb was born. And as he grew, I saw the resemblance. And I knew. I knew his real father would come looking.*

*His name is Marcus Vance. He is dangerous, Adrian. Powerful, cruel, and completely without conscience. He does not know about Caleb. I kept it a secret. I changed the records. I told everyone Caleb was yours. I did it to protect you both. If Marcus ever finds out he has a son… he will take Caleb. And he will destroy anyone who stands in his way.*

*I left everything to you. So you would have the means to protect him. But be careful. If anyone asks about Caleb’s birth certificate. If anyone mentions the name Marcus Vance. Run. Hide. Do not trust anyone. Not even those closest to you.*

*I love you, Adrian. I love you both. Forgive me.*

*Always,*

*Emily*

I folded the letter slowly, mechanically, as if my hands belonged to someone else. Caleb was not my son. But Emily had loved him. She had asked me to protect him. And in my heart… nothing had changed. He was still my boy. Still the child who called me Daddy. Who ran to me when he was scared. Who hid this letter to keep me safe.

But Vanessa knew. That was why she’d been so desperate to find it. That was why she’d told Caleb he wasn’t my real son. She knew.

How? How could she know what Emily had taken to her grave?

May you like

I looked down at the sleeping child. His face was peaceful now, free of fear.

I would protect him. I would keep Emily’s secret. I would keep Caleb safe. And I would find out exactly what Vanessa knew. And why she was willing to destroy a child to get her hands on that letter.
