Chapter 5 - THE TRUTH IN THE FIRE

The door crashed open. Sarah rushed in, her face pale and streaked with dirt. “Ava—are you hurt?”

I didn’t answer. I sank to the floor, sobbing until my chest ached, until I could barely breathe. They had taken her. They had taken my daughter.

Sarah knelt beside me, putting her arms around me. “We’ll get her back. I promise you. We will get her back.”

“How?” I cried. “They’re gone. They have her. And Daniel is her father. The law will give him the benefit of the doubt.”

Sarah helped me stand up, guiding me to the chair by the cold hearth. “Listen to me. Daniel took her because he believes he’s rescuing her. Evelyn is manipulating him. But he doesn’t know what Evelyn really intends to do with Grace. Once he realizes she’s in danger… he might bring her back.”

“He won’t,” I whispered. “He believes every word Evelyn says. He thinks I’m the villain.”

“Then we prove her lies,” Sarah said firmly. “We prove exactly what Evelyn is capable of. We find the evidence your father hid. And we expose her before she can hurt Grace.”

I wiped my eyes, forcing myself to breathe. “My father said there was proof. In the letter. Or somewhere here.”

We began searching the cabin. Every drawer. Every shelf. Every book. We tore the place apart, looking for anything—documents, ledgers, recordings, anything that could prove Evelyn’s crimes.

Hours passed. The night grew deeper. We found nothing.

I sat on the floor beside the fireplace, exhausted, staring into the cold ashes. “What if there is no proof? What if my father lied to give me hope?”

Sarah sat beside me. “He didn’t lie. He told me before he died: ‘Everything I have is to protect Ava and Grace. If anything happens to me, the truth is where they’ll never look.’”

I looked at the fireplace. At the heavy stone mantel. At the loose brick beside the hearth that I remembered from childhood.

I reached out and pulled. The brick came away easily.

Inside, wrapped in oilcloth to protect it from damp, was a thick stack of documents and a small, sealed metal box.

My hands shook as I pulled them out. We spread the papers across the floor by flashlight.

Bank records. Dates. Names. Amounts. Transfers from Holloway Industries to offshore accounts. Payments to Evelyn’s private accounts. Records of transactions going back twenty years.

And there was more—photographs. Witness statements. Handwritten notes in Evelyn’s own hand. Threats. Demands. Confessions.

And finally, a letter from my father. Dated the day before he died.

To my dearest Ava,

If you are reading this, it means Evelyn has made her move. She will stop at nothing to take what is mine. What is yours. What belongs to Grace.

She has stolen from the company for years. She arranged the “accident” that killed her own brother. She has threatened me, threatened your mother, threatened anyone who stands in her way.

Daniel… poor, foolish Daniel. He believes she is protecting him. She is using him. Once she has Grace and full control, she will cast him aside. She does not love anyone but herself.

The truth is in these papers. Every crime. Every lie. Every payment. Every threat.

If Grace is taken… do not fight Evelyn with force. Fight her with the truth. Expose her. Let the world see exactly who she is. And trust that somewhere inside Daniel… there is still the man you married. The man who can be reached.

Evelyn thinks power is what you own. Real power, Ava… is what you are willing to sacrifice to protect the ones you love.

Fight for Grace. Fight for the

truth. And remember—I am always with you.

Love,

Father

I finished reading through blurry tears. Sarah leaned over my shoulder, her face grave as she scanned the documents.

“This is everything,” she said quietly. “Embezzlement. Fraud. Witness statements regarding her brother’s death. These records prove she has been systematically looting Holloway Industries for decades. And the handwriting samples match the threats sent to your father.”

“She killed her own brother,” I whispered, my stomach turning. “And she would kill Grace too.”

Sarah gripped my hand. “These papers are our shield, Ava. Evelyn doesn’t know they exist. She believes she holds all the cards. She believes she can still manipulate Daniel, take control, and silence you forever.”

I stood up slowly, clutching the stack of documents to my chest. “Then we take them to her. We lay the truth before Daniel. And we make him choose—once and for all.”

“It’s dangerous,” Sarah warned. “If Evelyn realizes you have proof of everything… she won’t hesitate to silence you. Permanently.”

“I don’t care,” I said. “She has my daughter. And I will trade my own life to bring Grace home.”
