Chapter 16 - THE EVIDENCE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

We visited Evelyn in prison three days later. She sat behind thick glass, looking older, grayer, but still with that same cold, arrogant fire in her eyes.
“You cannot keep her from me,” Evelyn said, her voice calm and confident. “She is Holloway blood. She belongs with family.”
“You tried to have her kidnapped,” I said. “You hired a man to take her. To hurt us.”
Evelyn smiled—a thin, cruel line. “I did what was necessary. And I will try again. And again. Until I get what is mine.”
Then Daniel leaned forward. He placed a single sheet of paper against the glass.
Evelyn’s smile faltered.
“You thought you destroyed all the copies,” Daniel said quietly. “But you kept one. In your private safe. Thomas found it before he was arrested. And he gave it to us. As a final act of justice.”
Evelyn stared at the paper. Her face drained of color.
“It is the original will,” Daniel said. “The one you tried to destroy. Written by your own hand. Confessing everything. Including the fact that you planned to kill Ava and Grace the night you locked them in the cabin. You wrote it down… just in case something happened to you. Just so the truth would be known.”
Evelyn’s hands began to tremble. “That… that is not real…”
“It is real,” Daniel said. “And because of it… you will never be released. Ever. No parole. No mercy. You will spend the rest of your life in this cell. And Grace will never have to hear your name again.”
Evelyn stared at him—at her own son, holding the evidence that would destroy her forever. And then something in her broke.
“You have no idea what you’ve done,” she whispered, her voice shaking. “You think you’ve won? You think this is over? There are others. There are always others. And they will come for her.”
“Let them come,” Daniel said. “I will be waiting. And I will be ready.”
We walked away from the glass partition. Evelyn called after us—shouting threats, curses, warnings—but we did not look back.
Outside, the air felt crisp and clean. Daniel took my hand. “She is finished. Truly finished. No one can hurt Grace now.”

I looked at him—at the man who had stood up to his own mother. Who had risked everything to protect us. Who had fought his way back from darkness to become our shield.
“Yes,” I said softly. “We are safe.”
