Thinking

Chapter 17 - THE FINAL STAND

The months that followed were quiet. Evelyn’s threats proved empty—no one came. No more attempts. No more danger. She was locked away, powerless, and her reach did not extend beyond her prison walls.

Daniel moved into the guest house on our property. He did not ask to live in the main house. He did not ask to be my husband again. He simply asked to be near Grace. To help protect her. To be the father he had once been too afraid to become.

Grace adored him. She ran to him when he appeared each morning. She held his hand. She told him everything. And Daniel—patient, gentle, devoted—watched her with eyes full of love and regret.

One evening, as the sun set over the valley, we sat together on the porch. Grace was asleep inside. Daniel turned to me, his expression serious.

“I have been thinking,” he said. “About what comes next. About Grace. About us.”

I waited.

“I love you, Ava,” he said simply. “I have never stopped loving you. But I know I hurt you. Deeply. And I know that trust cannot be rebuilt in a day. Or even a year.”

He took a breath. “I do not ask to be your husband. Not yet. But I would like to be part of your life. Part of Grace’s life. I would like to earn your trust. Day by day. Choice by choice. For as long as it takes.”

I looked at him. At the man who had once been weak. Who had been manipulated. Who had nearly destroyed us. But who had fought his way back. Who had stood between us and danger. Who had risked everything to save our daughter.

“I would like that,” I said softly. “Very much.”

Daniel smiled—a genuine, hopeful smile. And for the first time in years, the future did not look like something to fear. It looked like something to build. Together.
