Chapter 10 - THE MIDPOINT TRUTH

We met at a quiet park on a sunny morning. Sarah stood nearby, keeping watch. I held Grace’s hand, my heart pounding.

Then I saw him.

Daniel stood at the edge of the path, wearing simple clothes, his hair shorter, his face lined but peaceful. He looked stronger. Calmer. There was no fear in his eyes anymore. No uncertainty. Just… hope. And humility.

He stopped a few feet away, hesitant, as if afraid to come too close.

“Hello, Ava,” he said softly.

“Hello, Daniel.”

He looked down at Grace, who stared back at him with wide, curious eyes. “She’s beautiful. Just like you.”

“Grace,” I said gently. “This is your father.”

Grace tilted her head. “Papa?”

Daniel’s face crumpled. He dropped to one knee, keeping his distance. “Yes, little one. I’m your papa. And I have loved you… every single day… since the moment you were born.”

Grace looked up at me. I nodded. She took a small step forward. Then another. Then she reached out and touched his hand.

Daniel broke down. He wept quietly, covering his face, as Grace patted his arm gently.

“Sad?” Grace asked.

“No,” Daniel said, taking a breath and lowering his hands. “Papa is happy. Very happy.”

He looked up at me, his eyes clear and bright. “Thank you. For trusting me this much.”

“Thank you,” I said, “for earning it.”

We sat on a bench that morning. Daniel told us about his work—building homes for families in need. About his therapy. About the man he was learning to be. He did not make excuses. He did not blame anyone but himself for his past mistakes. He simply… showed us who he was now.

As we stood to leave, he turned to me. “There is something else. Something I need to tell you. Something I found out last month.”

My heart tightened. “What is it?”

Daniel took a deep breath. “Evelyn didn’t act alone. She had help. Someone inside the company. Someone who knew exactly what she was doing and helped her cover it up. Someone who is still free.”

I stared at him. “Who?”

Daniel looked me straight in the eye. “Thomas. Your cousin. The one who warned you that night at the hospital.”

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. “Thomas? But… he helped us. He told us about Evelyn’s brother. He warned us.”

“He was playing both sides,” Daniel said gravely. “Evelyn paid him to feed you just enough information to trust him. To make you think he was the good guy. All so he could stay close to you… and to the evidence. He helped her lock you in. He helped her track you to the cabin. He was working for her all along.”

I felt sick. “But why tell me now?”

“Because I found the proof,” Daniel said. “Letters. Payments. Everything. And because I realized… he didn’t just work for Evelyn. He was her partner. And when Evelyn is released… he plans to take over.”

I gripped the back of the bench, my mind reeling. Evelyn in prison. Thomas the traitor. A double betrayal I had never seen coming.

Daniel placed his hand gently over mine. “I’m going to help you stop him. Whatever it takes. I won’t let anyone hurt you or Grace. Not ever again.”

I looked into his eyes—the eyes of the man I had once loved, lost, and now slowly found again. He was different. He was stronger. And for the first time in years… I believed him.
