Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH WE FINALLY ACCEPTED

Over the next year, Daniel became a constant, loving presence in our lives. He helped Grace learn to ride a bicycle. He read to her each night. He attended every doctor’s appointment, every school event, every moment that mattered. He never overstepped. Never demanded. Simply loved.

Grace began asking questions. About why her parents lived in separate houses. About her grandmother. About the past.

One evening, we sat down together—Grace between us—and told her the truth. Not all of it. Not the blood or the murder or the threats. But enough. To help her understand.

“Your grandmother was a very troubled woman,” Daniel told her gently. “She did many bad things. And she made mistakes that hurt people she claimed to love. Including me.”

Grace looked up at him with wise, serious eyes. “Is that why you were sad before?”

Daniel nodded, his voice thick. “Yes, sweetheart. That is why. But I am not sad anymore. Because I have you. And I have your mother.”

Grace reached out and took both our hands. “Then we are happy now. Right?”

Daniel looked at me. Tears glistened in his eyes. He squeezed Grace’s hand. “Yes, my love. We are happy now.”
