Chapter 15 - THE DAY WE ALMOST LOST EVERYTHING

In the weeks that followed, everything seemed to settle. Thomas was charged with conspiracy, fraud, and aiding Evelyn’s crimes. The evidence Daniel had gathered was overwhelming. Evelyn, learning that her secret son had turned against her, finally accepted full responsibility for everything—including her brother’s death, her crimes, and her manipulation of both Thomas and Daniel. She wrote a formal confession, admitting every sin, and renounced all claims to the Holloway name and fortune.
Peace, it seemed, had finally arrived.
But peace is fragile. And sometimes… the most dangerous storms come when the sky looks clear.
It was a bright autumn morning. Grace was three and a half. Daniel was visiting—chaperoned, cautious, but steadily growing closer to us. We were playing in the garden when Grace ran toward the gate, chasing a butterfly.
And that was when it happened.
A man stepped from the shadows. Not Thomas. Not Evelyn. A stranger. He grabbed Grace before anyone could react.
“GRACE!” I screamed, lunging forward.
Daniel was faster. He threw himself at the man, fighting with desperate strength. But the stranger was large and determined. He shoved Daniel aside, struck him hard across the face, and dragged Grace toward a waiting car. Grace screamed at the top of her lungs, fighting with every ounce of her tiny strength.
Daniel scrambled to his feet, blood streaming from his nose. He tackled the man again. This time, he did not let go. He fought with a terrifying, protective fury—blows landing, voices shouting, Grace crying and scrambling free.
The stranger broke away, realized he had lost his chance, and fled—leaving Daniel on the ground, bleeding, holding Grace tightly against his chest as she sobbed into his shoulder.
I fell beside them, gathering both in my arms, shaking uncontrollably. Grace was unharmed. Daniel was bruised and bleeding—but he had shielded her with his own body.
Later, at the police station, we learned the truth. The man had been hired by Evelyn. From prison. She had paid him to take Grace. To “bring her where she belonged.” She had known Thomas would be arrested. She had known her power was fading. So she had sent one final, desperate blow.

Daniel sat in silence as the police told us. Then he stood up, his face hard and cold. “She will never stop. Not until she takes everything from us.”
I looked at Grace—safe, but terrified. And then I looked at Daniel. “Then we have to make certain she cannot hurt us ever again.”
