Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

Over the next two weeks, Thomas believed he had won. He strutted through the company offices, giving orders, making changes, acting as if he were already in charge. He was arrogant. Overconfident. And increasingly careless.

Daniel watched him. Recorded him. Documented every illegal decision, every shady deal, every threat.

Then one rainy evening, Daniel called me, his voice tight with urgency. “Come to my place. Now. I found something.”

When I arrived, he laid a thick folder on the table. “I went through Evelyn’s personal records. Letters. Diaries. Everything. And I found something about Thomas. Something she kept hidden even from him.”

He opened the folder and pushed a faded photograph toward me. It showed Evelyn, younger, standing beside a man I recognized instantly—Thomas’s father. And between them… a small boy.

“Thomas is Evelyn’s son,” Daniel said quietly. “Her first child. Born out of wedlock. Kept secret. Raised as her nephew. She never acknowledged him. But she groomed him from childhood to be her successor.”

I stared at the photograph, stunned. “All this time… he believed she looked down on him. That he was never good enough. When in truth… she was his mother.”

“And she used that,” Daniel said. “She made him crave her approval. Made him work twice as hard. Made him desperate to prove himself. And then… she handed everything to Daniel instead.”

Realization struck me like lightning. “That is why he helped her. That is why he stayed. And that is why he hates you so much. You got everything he believed he deserved. By right of blood.”

Daniel nodded slowly. “If he finds out the truth… that she was his mother… that she used him… it will destroy him. It could break him completely. Or it could turn him against her forever.”

“It could also make him more dangerous than ever,” I said. “If he learns the truth and feels he has nothing left to lose…”

“Then we have to be careful,” Daniel finished. “Very careful.”
