Chapter 9 - THE THREAT BEHIND THE DOOR

Vanessa’s words echoed in my mind long after she was led away from the courtroom. You haven’t found everything. There is more. And when it comes out… you will wish you had never found that letter.
I stood frozen as the courtroom emptied. Eleanor touched my arm gently. “Adrian? We should go.”
I turned slowly. “She said there’s more. That Rachel kept other secrets.”
Eleanor’s expression grew serious. “Vanessa is angry and desperate. Desperate people say things to frighten you. Don’t let her words weigh on you.”
“But what if she’s telling the truth?”
“Then we will face it together,” Eleanor said firmly. “For now, go home to your children. Keep them safe. Let the police handle Vanessa. We have the restraining order. We have the evidence. She cannot come near you.”
I nodded, though the knot in my chest would not loosen. I drove home with Rachel’s letter tucked safely inside my jacket, staring at the road while Vanessa’s warning played on a loop in my head.
When I walked through the front door, Ethan was waiting in the hallway. He stood up quickly, his face tight with worry.
“How did it go?”
“Restraining order granted. Custody petition denied. Criminal charges are being filed.” I paused. “But she threatened us. She said Rachel had other secrets. That we haven’t found everything.”
Ethan went pale. “What kind of secrets?”
“I don’t know. But she meant it.” I looked toward the living room. “Where is Mia?”
“Upstairs. Drawing. She’s been asking when you’d be back.” Ethan hesitated, then lowered his voice. “Dad… do you think she’s telling the truth? About Mom?”
“I don’t know,” I admitted. “Rachel told me she had no other family. She told me she had no secrets. But she also told me she had never met Vanessa. And we know that was a lie.” I ran a hand over my face. “If there is something else… she hid it for a reason.”
That evening, once Mia was asleep, I sat at the kitchen table and spread out everything I had—the photograph, the letter, the journals, the DNA reports. I read every page again, searching for anything I might have missed. A name. A date. A place. A reference to something Rachel had kept from me.
Most of it was familiar. Memories of our life together. Hopes for Mia. Fears about her health. But then I reached the very last page of the final journal—the page after her warning to me. There was a single line written in faint, trembling ink:
*“It wasn’t natural causes. I know it wasn’t.”*
My breath caught. I read it again, my eyes stinging. She hadn’t written it as part of the letter. She had written it privately, in her journal, as if whispering it to herself.
Rachel had believed she was going to be killed. And she had suspected who would do it.
I stood up so quickly the chair scraped against the floor. I reached for the phone and called Eleanor. She answered on the first ring.
“Adrian? Is something wrong?”
“I found something else. In Rachel’s journal.” My voice shook. “She wrote that she didn’t believe her own illness was natural causes. As if she knew someone might hurt her.”
Eleanor was silent for a long time. “Adrian… I didn’t want to say anything. Not without proof. But Rachel told me, weeks before she died, that she was afraid Vanessa was poisoning her. That she kept waking up feeling dizzy, weak, like something was wrong inside her body. She said Vanessa had started bringing her tea every night. Refusing to let anyone else prepare it.”
My stomach turned over. “And?”
“And then she died. And the doctors said it was heart failure. Natural causes. But Rachel told me she had never felt better before Vanessa arrived. She said she felt sick… only after Vanessa moved in.”
I gripped the edge of the table until my fingers ached. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Rachel made me promise not to. She said if anything happened to her, I was to keep it secret until Mia was safe. She said Vanessa would be dangerous if she realized anyone suspected her.” Eleanor’s voice broke. “I waited. I hoped I was wrong. But seeing her in court today… hearing the things she said… I’m afraid Rachel was right all along.”
May you like
I hung up the phone and walked to the window. The night was dark and still. Somewhere out there, Vanessa was waiting. And she had told me I hadn’t found everything.
If Rachel had been murdered… then there was no limit to what Vanessa might do. And if there was another secret buried somewhere… I would find it. No matter what it cost me.
