Chapter 12 - THE DECISION

That evening, I sat down with Ethan and Mia.
Mia sat on the couch, her legs swinging, watching my face carefully. Ethan stood beside me, his arms crossed, his expression grim.
“I need to tell you both something,” I began, my voice steady despite the pain in my chest. “Something difficult. Something that changes everything.”
I told them everything. About Vanessa being Rachel’s daughter. About the threats. About the poisoning. About the baby Rachel had been carrying. About the secrets and the lies and the danger that had lived under our roof.
Mia listened quietly, her eyes growing wider with every word. When I finished, she didn’t cry. She just reached out and took my hand.
“She wanted to hurt me?” Mia asked softly. “Her own sister?”
“I believe she thought she was taking what was hers,” I said. “But that doesn’t make it right. And it doesn’t mean we are going to let her win.”
Ethan’s face was hard. “What happens now?”
“The police have the autopsy report. They have the evidence. They are charging her with obstruction of justice. And soon… they will charge her with murder.” I looked between my children. “But I need to know… are you both safe here? Do you want to stay with Eleanor for a while? Or would you rather go somewhere else until this is finished?”
Mia squeezed my hand tighter. “I want to stay with you.”
Ethan nodded. “We’re not running. Not from her. Not from anything.”

I looked at my children—brave, strong, and so deeply hurt—and felt a surge of pride so powerful it nearly overwhelmed me. We had been through hell. But we had survived it. Together.
“Then we stay,” I said. “We stay and we face this. And we make sure no one ever hurts us again.”
